American Physician Scientists Association (APSA)
West Virginia University School of Medicine Chapter

Core Purpose:
The American Physician Scientists Association is dedicated to career development and community building among physician-scientists in training.

Mission:
The APSA strives to be the student physician-scientists' leading voice for improving educational opportunities, advancing patient-oriented research, and advocating for the future of translational medicine. Specifically at WVU, we are striving to establish research opportunities and collaborations between medical students, MD/PhD students, PhD faculty, and clinical faculty in order to establish a productive research environment at WVU. All those interested in research are encouraged to sit in on a meeting or become an active member of
APSA!

Objectives:
Focusing on the needs of students and housestaff, including but not limited to MD/PhD trainees, APSA will pursue being:

  • The leading student organization for advancing opportunities for mentorship, community building, and mutual support of physician-scientists;
  • The principal source for obtaining and disseminating career development information for student physician-scientists regarding education, residency training, and beyond;
  • The most representative voice and influential advocate to policymakers and the American people regarding the need for supporting physician-scientist training;
  • A dynamic organization that provides value to its members.

APSA Website
APSA has been undergoing a new revamping of the website and it's finally here and ready to debut at http://beta.physicianscientists.org/.

Both the old site and the new site will be up and running over the course of the next month. At the conclusion of this time period (Nov. 14), the http://www.physicianscientists.org/ address will host the new website.

APSA Membership
With the debut of the new website, we are pleased to also formalize the membership aspect of the organization through membership dues. You can now officially join as a dues-paying member at http://membership.physicianscientists.org/ which has an explanation of the membership benefits.
Please contact Kelly Bailey (kkavana2@mix.wvu.edu) with any questions about membership or meeting times/locations at WVU.

APSA Regional Meetings
Also with the debut of the website, this new website handles an integrated event registration and membership management for our members. So now everything will be centralized on the APSA website as opposed to the multiple methods we previously used to accomplish these goals. If you aren't already aware, the APSA Regional Meetings are now also underway with registration available at the following sites:
APSA California Physician Scientists Symposium - http://cameeting.physicianscientists.org/
APSA New York Physician Scientists Symposium - http://nymeeting.physicianscientists.org/
APSA Texas Physician Scientists Symposium - http://txmeeting.physicianscientists.org/

APSA Annual Meeting
This national event is held every spring in Chicago, IL.
