Integrative Medicine Interest Group
“The best prescription is knowledge.”
-- C. Everett Koop
The Integrative Medicine Interest Group provides a forum for students of the health sciences to augment their medical curriculum with information about health and healing philosophies from various traditions. Meetings will present background information and current research on topics such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nutrition, Yoga, Massage, Tai Chi, and Osteopathy in a frank, scientific manner. As appropriate, presentations will be followed by interactive demonstrations and critical discussion of the topics and how certain principles can be appropriately incorporated into accepted standards of care.
A parallel, and equally important, focus of the group is to offer support for maintaining or obtaining a robust and healthy lifestyle in the medical school environment and beyond. One immediate way of achieving this goal is to offer a lunch meal at meetings as an example of food that is healthy, easy to prepare, and affordable.
Mission Statement: The Integrative Medicine Interest Group was established in 2006 at WVU School of Medicine with the goal to introduce alternative therapies of healing to those studying mainstream medicine. We will take a hands-on approach to learn about complementary and alternative medicines by re-instating a lecture series including demonstrations from local CAM practitioners. We will focus on practicing healthy lifestyles as medical students and uphold the traditions of healthy eating, exercise, and making time for oneself for relaxing and reflection exercises. The medical students will benefit by learning the essentials of self-care, and discovering how to incorporate them through the challenges of medical school. Interested students can sign up for a 6 month trial of massage or other alternative therapy sessions with one of the local CAM alliances of the interest group free of charge. Our approach is to introduce other methods of healing to future healers with the ultimate goal of creating an environment open to integrative medicine.
