Psychiatry Student Interest Group (PSIG)
Mission Statement:
The Psychiatry Student Interest Group serves to encourage medical students to explore psychiatry as a potential medical profession as well as a discipline to be applied in all areas of medicine. PSIG promotes education, service, and advocacy in the realm of psychiatry, mental health, and wellness including psychiatry as a career and psychiatry as it relates to other areas of medicine.
By Laws:
- Any student currently enrolled in West Virginia University School of Medicine is eligible for membership.
- The Psychiatry Student Interest Group will meet monthly during the academic year, from September to April, and more often, if deemed necessary by its members.
- The Psychiatry Student Interest Group will be governed by an elected executive committee consisting of no less than 2, but no more than 4 members including: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Officers will be elected at the final meeting of each year by the members of Psychiatry Student Interest Group.
- The Psychiatry Student Interest Group will collaborate closely with an advisor who understands the goals of the Psychiatry Student Interest Group and is committed to the achievement of the aforementioned goals.
Activities:
- Presentations on psychiatry as a career, subspecialties of psychiatry, psychiatry in film and music, doctor-patient relationships, mental health in medical school, communication skills, psychiatric disorders, etc
- Service opportunities and fundraising
- Shadowing experiences
- Advocacy for patients and medical students
- Meetings with other interest groups
