Norman D. Ferrari III, MD
Senior Associate Dean
Norman D. Ferrari III, MD was appointed Associate Dean for Student Services and Academic Progress in August 1999. In the summer of 2006, Dean John Prescott appointed him as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education. In that role, he will be responsible for all physician medical education programs of the School, including the MD degree admissions process, the development and implementation of the curriculum, student affairs, graduate medical education, continuing education, and accreditation.
He is a Professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, and served eight years as Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Pediatrics. In the summer of 2001, he was appointed Interim Dean for Medicine and Associate Vice-President for the Charleston Division of West Virginia University and served in that role until September 2002.
Dr. Ferrari received a BA degree in Chemistry from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences of West Virginia University, Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1978. He graduated from the WVU School of Medicine in 1982 having been elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. At West Virginia University Hospitals, he completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in 1986. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
Since joining the faculty in 1986, he served as Pediatric Clerkship Coordinator for 13 years, is the first faculty member to twice be named as the Distinguished Teacher of the Year in the School of Medicine, and served as Interim Chair for Pediatrics from March 1998 until June 1999, and again in December 2002 until January 2006. Since 1991 he has been the coordinator for the School of Medicine rural health educational programs and curriculum. In 2001, he was recipient of a WVU Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award. He is also a former Chief of the section of General Pediatrics. From 1990 until 1999, he served as Medical Director of the Physician Office Center and Associate Dean for Ambulatory Services. The only physician in the state of West Virginia currently serving on the American Board of Pediatrics, in 2003 he was appointed Chair of the General Certifying Exam Committee for General Pediatrics by the ABP. In 2003 he was awarded the Bishop's Cross Award by the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston for his longstanding contributions to Catholic Education in the State of West Virginia.
Dr. Ferrari is a native of Weirton, WV were he attended St. Joseph the Worker School and Madonna High School. He lives in Morgantown with his wife, Nancy, and his two children, Elizabeth and Nicholas.
