Circa Terra Charleston Division

We invite you to become a part of Circa Terra (Latin for "around the world"), a student organization at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. Circa Terra was founded in 2005 with the desire to lend a hand in addressing the medical needs of developing nations. Circa Terra provides a means for medical students to become involved in the international effort to export surplus medical supplies to hospitals and clinics in dire need throughout the world.

We collect surplus medical supplies from Ruby Memorial Hospital and Monongalia General Hospital and transport them to Global Links, a distribution center in Pittsburgh. The medical supplies we collect have been opened but not used for hospital procedures. If we do not collect them, they are thrown away and incinerated by the hospital. The amount of materials wasted in this manner each year is enormous. Through the efforts of Circa Terra in collaboration with Global Links, we can put these materials to good use.

Missions and goals
The purpose of Circa Terra is to collect medical equipment that cannot be used in Ruby Memorial and Monongalia General Hospitals and provide it to Global Links for export to developing countries. The equipment we collect has been opened but not used for medical procedures. However, it is clean and safe for use in countries where such supplies are desperately needed.
We meet about two or three times every semester to sort the materials and pack them for transport to Global Links in Pittsburgh. We collect the supplies every week from the hospital and store them until there is enough to pack and sort. This is an excellent way to get community service hours while making a real difference in the life of someone in a country less fortunate than ours.

There is always a need for drivers to bring the packed items to Pittsburgh. If you are going to Pittsburgh, please email vbazeley@mix.wvu.edu. If you are able to just deliver a few boxes to Global Links, which will be a great support. This, too, is a great way to earn community service hours.
