FAMILY HAPPENINGS:
CONGRATULATIONS to John Renton, Class of 2004, on the presentation of the Eberly Family Professor for Distinguished Teaching. award to his father, Professor John "Jack" Renton, WVU Professor of Geology. Only four others hold that distinction.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jennifer Knight, Class of 2003 and Dr. Ryan McCarthy, Class of 2004, who were highlighted in The New Physicians, July-August 2002 "Odd Jobs".

CONGRATULATIONS to the Eastern Campus. State Lawmakers have approved $1 million of this year's budget digest fund to support the new program. The federal government is investing $3.5 million, a three-to-one match of the state's investment.

EVENTS:
STUDENT SERVICES in Charleston/Morgantown closed on Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

NEW STUDENT ELECTRONIC DIRECTORY: Student Services is creating an electronic directory on SOLE for access by students and faculty following the FERPA national guidelines. Students have the Right of Non-Disclosure with a signed, written request submitted to this office by September 1st of each year.

ADDENDUM TO FERPA: The School of Medicine FERPA policy has been revised to include this information and outline the School's designated directory of information. Please review this addendum on the "academic and Professional Standards" link to the Student Services web page.

STUDENT SERVICES EVENTS CALENDAR: You will notice in today's MOW numerous events announced for 2002-2003. These are posted on the Student Services Events Calender, www.hsc.wvu.edu/som/students/calendar . First and Second year academic dates (start/stop/holidays) are also posted. Soon we will begin the first and second year exam schedule for 2002-2003. Please refer to this calender as you make plans for next year.

AOA MEMBERS ONLY: Wednesday, August 28, 2002 - 5:00 p.m. John E. Jones Conf. Rm. "A". This is done on both Morgantown and Charleston Campuses.

CROSS CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS: July is not only our celebration of Independence, but an incredible food month: National Baked Bean Month, National Hot Dog Month, National Ice Cream Month and National Blueberries Month. Other celebrations include: (6th) National Pickle Festival and National Fried Chicken Day; (9) Lobster Carnival; (17th) Avocado Festival; (25th) National Hot Fudge Sundae Day; (26th) Garlic Festival; (29th) National Lasagna Day and Cherry Feast; (30th) National Cheesecake Day; and (31st) National raspberry Cake Day. ENJOY!

NEW CLASS OFFICERS: Congratulations to President Scott Oxley, Vice President Manu Aggarwal, Secretary/Treasurer David Tingler, and Academic Council Jason Misenhelder.

GETTING TO RESIDENCY PART 2 - THE INTERVIEW: We have set two dates if you wish to participate in this year's "GTR - The Interview", August 27, 3:00 - 5:00 P.M. and October 10, 3:00 - 5:00 P.M. This program will present tips for successful residency interviewing and the opportunity for a brief mock interview so you can see what it's like to be "in the hot seat". If you are interested in signing-up for one of these sessions, please reply to this email specifying the desired date and your chosen residency program. A Charleston Campus date will soon be announced. Students on both campuses can select from any of the most convenient dates/location .

USE OF REC CENTER AND STUDENT HEALTH DURING SUMMER 2: As a continuing WVU student, you are eligible to purchase a Summer Optional Services Card, $109.00, through the Health Sciences Center A&R or the Towers Cashier's Office. This card will also give you use of the PRT.

Community Service Opportunities:

CHRISTIAN HELP: We are in need of volunteers in the afternoons at Christian Help at 219 Walnut Street. The hours would be anytime between 1 and 4 PM. The volunteers would fill food orders or sit at the desk and greet clients. What's Happening This Week — Charleston:

WELCOME BACK MS 4 STUDENTS AND WELCOME TO THE CHARLESTON CAMPUS MS 3 STUDENTS.

MEDICAL STUDENT WORKSTATION is located in room 3079 of the WVU Building. The workstation is equipped to allow use of the p-counter system. The workstation is accessible 24/7 with combination access available from the Office of Student Services. The combination is changed each academic year for security purposes.

MS 4/ Class of 2003:
RESIDENCY LOAN APPLICATIONS: New applications from Access Group, a private loan company, have been received in the Office of Student Services. If you are interested in looking for a loan to help with your move into residency, drop by the office and take a copy.

MS 3/ Class of 2004:
INSURANCE CARDS AND HEALTH BADGES have been placed in your mailbox.

NOTICE FOR MEDICAL STUDENT SPOUSES OR SIGNIFICANT OTHERS: Attention Medical Students: Please give this message to your spouses or significant others. I need your support! Greetings: My name is Arlene Clausell. I am responsible for working with medical student spouses and significant others. My job is to help you develop a support group. In this support group, we will generate a newsletter, schedule 3 to 4 meetings a year(more you wish), meet other spouses and significant orders, develop interest groups, and participant in community service projects. We would like to plan a picnic for this August. This picnic is dependent solely on your participation and planning.
