FAMILY HAPPENINGS:
WEDDING: Congratulations to Ginger Layne, Class of 2005, who married Craig Hatfield on July 18th.

Welcome to the Class of 2006 !! Starting this week, we will be sending the incoming medical students in the Class of 2006, our weekly messages. Orientation begins for them in mid-August, one week prior to the start of classes.

EVENTS:
MULTIFEST IN CHARLESTON August 2-4 at State Capitol, a celebration of cultural diversity through music, cuisine, education and the arts. All events are free.

POSTING YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS: Effective this date, all Community Services entries are to be made through your SOLE link. Do not transfer any hours listed on your demographic page link. The Office of Student Services will transfer the total number of approved hours for your complete record.

What's Happening this Week — Morgantown:
Class Notes:

FALL TUITION/FEES: We have been advised that the billing for Fall term 2002 was mailed by Monday, July 29. All students were registered for fall. All students should receive Fall Invoices with this mailing. This will be the only detailed bill you will receive. Student Accounts only sends out one statement each term with itemized charges on it. Please keep the top portion for your records if you are mailing in a payment with the bottom portion. If you receive financial aid that covers tuition/fees, make no payment at this time. Financial aid will be applied to your account around August 19th and any remainder will be sent to you in the form of a refund check. If you are confused or have ANY question about your account contact Pam (2934-2409 or 1-800-543-5650) pcarico@hsc.wvu.edu. Early questions make for smoother sailing later!



MS 4/Class of 2003:
GETTING TO RESIDENCY PART 2 August 27 registration will be closed this Friday, August 2nd. If you are interested (also Charleston students) in participating in this session, reply to the email and note your specialty of choice.

EARLY MATCH STUDENTS: For those students who are applying for Residency Programs in Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Neurology, and Neurosurgery:
Otolaryngology: CAS Target Date - August 14, 2002
Ophthalmology: CAS Target Date - September 4, 2002
Neurology: CAS Target Date - August 21, 2002
Neurosurgery: CAS Target Date - August 21, 2002
CAS (Central Application Service) is mandatory for Ophthalmology, ENT, Neurosurgery, and optional for Neurology.

STUDENT SERVICES CLOSED: Wednesday, July 31. Staff will be attending computer classes in Morgantown.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Thursday, July 19 for the 6:00 PM annual WVU/CAMC picnic at Maier Village for students, interns, residents and fellows. An invitation with more details will follow.

The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) of Charleston will be hosting the following activity:

August 27, 2002 (tentative date) - The Family Medicine Interest Group will be hosting an Alley Cats Baseball Game. If you are interested, contact Kelly by August 1st, so that tickets can be ordered.

If anyone has ideas on lectures, workshops or activities, please do not hesitate in letting Kelly know. The FMIG is very open to your ideas.

GOING ON AN AUGUST AWAY ROTATION? Stop in Student Services to complete a transcript request form. We will submit to A&R as Block VI grades and honors are posted to transcripts. The class will be advised when all transcripts are complete.

APPOINTMENT WITH DR. GRIFFITH: If you have not schedule your appointment contact the Office of Student Services at 347-1319. This is a required meeting to take place before the end of Block 1.

TB RESPIRATOR MASK: A card and other documentation of the mask fit has been placed in your mailboxes. Keep in a safe place for future reference.

1. Reading Charts (MAR, Orders, Graphics, Progress Notes, Nursing Notes, Lab/Radiology/EKG)
2. Writing Notes - format, content, and organization, differences among rotations (SOAP, H&P's, Consults, ICU Notes)
3. Labs (Common studies and normal ranges, Short hand notation for CBE, BMP)
4. Orders (Admission Orders, Discharge Orders)
5. Prescription Writing
6. Presenting at Rounds
7. Medical Abbreviations (QD, BID, PO, IV, IM, HTN, CAD, Ca, etc.)
8. References (What to carry in your pocket, for hand-helds, test prep and board study)
9. Rotation Experiences (Taking call, Typical hours, Expectations, Rurals, Volunteer Hours, Advice…Professionalism and Confidentiality, Showing Interest)

The Family Medicine Interest Group of Charleston will be doing a workshop on the above items for your convenience.
