Message of the Week #153
August 6th, 2002

FAMILY HAPPENINGS:
WELCOME CLASS OF 2006! Orientation begins next week, August 12th. Monday and Tuesday the class will be at Jackson's Mill. Wednesday through Friday they will be here at the Health Sciences Center. Welcome them to our family.

EVENTS:
CRITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS: The Committee on Academic and Professional Standards has recommended to the faculty in the School of Medicine some changes to the School's Policy on Professional Integrity. Following a period of review, comment and dialogue the changes to the Integrity Policy have been adopted and are now posted on the web. It is the expectation of the Office of Student Services that all students will review the revised policy. Of note, the most significant change comes in Section 4.2 related to the student pledge not to cheat. The policy now clearly defines any form of communication between students during an examination as forbidden and equivalent to cheating. What is communicated does not matter. No communication is permitted. The policy can be located at this link: http://www.hsc.wvu.edu/som/students/standards/integritypolicy02.htm

IMPORTANT EMAIL ANNOUNCEMENT:
The WVU Mountaineer Information Xpress, or MIX, system will be unavailable from August 9 - August 13 due to a system upgrade. The MIX system, including e-mail, will be unavailable during these days. See WVU's announcement below.

Mountaineer E-News
Improved MIX will offer new features; system to be unavailable during Aug. 9-13 upgrade. Students and faculty will notice e-mail improvements and other new features when the Mountaineer Information Xpress, or MIX, Version 3.1 debuts on campus after an Aug. 9-13 upgrade. The MIX system, including e-mail, will be unavailable on those days as the upgrade work takes place. First-time MIX users can access their accounts by going to http://star.wvu.edu and clicking on "WVU STAR web" and then on "WVU STAR system." The user should then follow the instructions on the screen. For security reasons, the default password should be changed after MIX is accessed for the first time. When they are finished using the system, users should always log out. MIX staff will be available to help users the first week of classes at a booth in the Mountainlair Monday, Aug. 19, through Thursday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and at the Health Sciences Center Friday, Aug. 23, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

UPDATE REQUEST: The Office of Alumni will be mailing Fall Family Weekend invitations to your parents. Please update your parent addresses on the demographic page. Update the rest of your page while you are at it!

COMMENTS ON THE UNIVERSITY POLICY ON FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION: West Virginia University officials will use the month of August to accept final public comment on the school's interim policy on freedom of expression before it goes to the WVU Board of Governors Sept. 6 for final approval. The latest policy, which went into effect July 3, replaced an initial interim policy adopted in April. During the past month, the new interim policy underwent minor changes after review by WVU regional campuses. Public comment is now being sought from the University community as well as WVU's regional campuses until Aug. 28. "This is the final opportunity for comment and we want to make sure everyone is heard on this matter," said Bobbie Brandt, associate general counsel. "We've found that the many suggestions made by faculty, staff, students, legal staff and outside consultants have enhanced our policy." The new interim policy, which includes a facility reservation procedure and a listing of outside assembly areas, is posted on the Internet at http://www.wvu.edu/freespeechpolicy.html Comments on the revised draft may be directed no later than Aug. 28 to Bobbie Brandt, associate general counsel, at: wvugeneralcounsel@mail.wvu.edu or via fax, 304-293-2326. The final document will be presented to the BOG Board of Governors at its September meeting.
