FAMILY HAPPENINGS:The Office of Student Services bid a fond farewell to Robin Garten, a member of the Charleston division office. Robin has been with Student Services for several years and has recently resigned her position effective next week. We wish Robin much success in the future and thank her for all her hard work.
NOTICES:MIX DOWN ON Sunday: On September 22, from 8am to 2pm, the MIX system will be unavailable due to a planned system upgrade. During the upgrade, all incoming email will be queued and delivered when the system comes back online by 2pm. If you have any questions, please call the Customer Service Center at 293-3631.
MIX MANAGEMENT: Your MIX account only has 10 mg of space. If your account becomes too full some emails may not be received. Therefore, remember to empty unnecessary mail to avoid non-receipt due of important emails.
PCOUNT RESET: If you need your pcount reset, email your request to this address, StudentServicesMedicine@hsc.wvu.edu . The request will be validated and forwarded to ISO for reset.
WHAT IS COMMUNITY SERVICE: Many of you have asked if certain projects would be considered Community Services. Questions to ask: Am I receiving pay for this work? If yes... it is NOT community service. Am I receiving educational course credit for this work? If yes... it is NOT community service. Is this service to the School of Medicine?.... If yes.... it is NOT community service. If you are still unclear about your specific request, email Drs. Cather, Ferrari, Griffith for approval/clarification.
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS: If you did not have representation at the organizational meeting held on Fri., Sept. 6, you have until September 30, 2002 to get your organizations information to Carol Kurcaba in Student Services. If we don't have the required information from you by Sept. 30 your organization will be classified as inactive. If you have questions please contact Carol at ckurcaba@hsc.wvu.edu. Check your email on September 11 regarding the required information needed.
Awards, Scholarships, Fellowships are open to all medical students from the national Alpha Omega Alpha. Medical Student Service Project Award, Student Essay Award, Student Research Award Fellowship. If you are interested please contact Carol Kurcaba in Student Services for deadlines at ckurcaba@hsc.wvu.edu. We have had student win these national awards before. This is an excellent way to build a great CV for residency applications.

FOOTBALL TENTS: The School of Medicine / Student Tent is being held under the POC Portico on Sat., Oct. 5 Maryland Game and Sat., Oct. 26 Miami Game. You should have received a flyer in your HSC Mailbox. Each medical student may invite one guest. If you would like to attend the tent - you must RSVP on the DEMOGRAPHIC Page! If you have not done this, you will not be admitted to the Tent! If you do not RSVP or you decide to bring an additional guest then you could be charged a fee of $5.00 per person. FIELD TRIP: March 14, 2003. Students will depart from the WVU Coliseum and ride the buses to Charleston. The buses will depart at 7:30 a.m. and return around 7 p.m. You will be touring all the different facilities on the Charleston Campus.

WELCOME RECEPTION: Thursday, September 19, 3:30 - 5:30 pm, 4th floor WVU Building for Dr. L. Clark Hansbarger, Associate Vice President for Health Sciences and School of Medicine Dean, Charleston Division and Director of Medical Education, CAMC.
NEW OB/GYN CHAIR: Dr. Christos Hatjis joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as Chairman on Monday, September 16. Dr. Hatjis comes to the Charleston Division from St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he served as Ob/Gyn Chairman and Director of Perinatal Services. He has also been on the faculty at the University of Cincinnati and Bowman Gray School of Medicine.
CAMC ANNUAL PICNIC: Thursday, September 19, 6-8:30pm, Maier Village. Immediate family welcome. This event also celebrates the 30th anniversary for CAMC and for the WVU Charleston Division.
RESEARCH LUNCH AND LEARN: The next Research Lunch and Learn will be held Wednesday, September 18, from noon - 1 p.m. and is entitled, "Current Issues in Nursing Research," by Cynthia Persily, PhD, RN. It may be viewed in Rooms 101 and 102 at General Hospital, the Board Room at Women and Children's Hospital and by "live" lecture in Room 2000 of the WVU Building next door to Memorial Hospital. Lunch is available in all 3 cafeterias for 30 cents on that day in celebration of CAMC's 30th anniversary. Bring your lunch and join the group!

LONGITUDINAL WORKSHOP: Monday, September 23 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm in WVU Building Rooms 3292, 3294, and 3296. The workshop is on EKG Interpretation. A workshop will be offered each block. You are excused from rotation to attend the workshop.
Community Service Opportunities:
AMERICAN HEART WALK This annual community fund-raising event in Charleston will be held on Saturday, September 21 at 8:30am, on the grounds of the State Capitol. Funds raised go to fight cardiovascular diseases and stroke. If you would like to be involved in this event, please contact Angela Mayfield at 965-7998. The earlier you call, the more variety of volunteer areas you will have from which to choose.
AMERICA'S WALK FOR DIABETES: Saturday, October 5, Charleston's Coonskin Park. Walk begins at 10:00 am. For information about volunteer services or to register for the walk call (304)768-2596 x4599.

HUMANISM IN MEDICINE ESSAY CONTEST: "Put Your Heart in Your Hand" The contest is open to any student of an accredited school studying to practice medicine. Write an essay or story of 1,000 words or less on the following theme: A Humanistic Role Model in My Medical Career. First prize: $1000 cash, Second prize: $500 cash, Third prize: $250 cash, Honorable mention: 10 Certificates of merit The Arnold P.
