NOTICES:
AOA AWARDS, SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS: Open to all medical students Medical Student Service Project Award, Student Essay Award, Student Research Award Fellowship. To learn more about these awards go to the Student Services Web Page, under organizations, Alpha Omega Alpha National Link. We have had students win these national awards before. This is an excellent way to build a great CV for residency applications.

HSSP SCHOLARSHIPS: These $20,000 scholarships are for seniors who match in primary care residencies in WV. Deadline for application is October 15th. Contact Elaine Mason for details. emason@hsc.wvu.edu

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ALUMNI WEEKEND 2002: October 18; 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Lakeview Kick Off Reception hosted by Dean D'Alessandri (reception for School of Medicine alumni, faculty, students and housestaff). Watch for details in your mail box.

FOOTBALL TENTS: under the POC Portico on Sat., Oct. 26 Miami Game. Each medical student may invite one guest. If you would like to attend the tent - you must RSVP on the DEMOGRAPHIC Page! If you do not RSVP or you decide to bring an additional guest then you could be charged a fee of $5.00 per person. If you have any questions, contact Carol Kurcaba in Student Services at ckurcaba@hsc.wvu.edu.

AOA: Next planning meeting for Morgantown and Charleston members has been set for Tues., Oct. 22 from noon -1 p.m. Morgantown will be in the WV Room, Charleston location TBD.

AMWA: The American Medical Women's Assoc. offers a number of student benefits to women medical students. (Medical Education Loans, Community Service Scholarship, Research Paper Award, Mentoring Award, Bed and Breakfast Program). DIVERSITY WEEK: Ceremonies will be held on Thurs., October 17, 2002, John Jones Conf. Center. Come join in the festivities!

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL MEDICAL STUDENTS SPONSORED BY AOA: Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 29th to cook dinner for the Residents of Ronald McDonald House. Preparation of meal to begin at 5:30 pm with dinner to be served at approximately 6:30pm with clean up to follow. Hours are approved are an hour for hour basis for time worked. Menu and food donations list will be distributed at a later date. ACADEMIC COUNCIL MEETING: Wednesday, October 9, 3:00 p.m., West Virginia Room.

FIELD TRIP: March 14, 2003. Students will depart from the WVU Coliseum and ride the buses to Charleston. The buses will depart at 7:30 a.m. and return around 7 p.m. You will be touring all the different facilities on the Charleston Campus.

Community Service Opportunities:
WORK AT THE CANCER CENTER EXHIBIT at the WVU Health Expo at the Morgantown Mall on Oct. 25. The expo goes from 9 am to 9 pm. Volunteers are especially needed who can staff it from 4 p to 9 p. Interested students can e-mail Sherry Stoneking at ..sstoneking@hsc.wvu.edu... or call 293-4599.

Class Notes:
CAMC GRAND ROUNDS: Wednesday, October 9, 2002, 8:00 A.M., Room 2000 WVU Building. George A. Beller, M.D. from the University of Virginia Health System will be presenting "Diagnostic and Prognostic Value of Nuclear Cardiology Techniques in Patients with Suspected or Known Coronary Artery Disease."

RESEARCH LUNCH AND LEARN: Wednesday, October 16, noon. Topic: "Decisions on Practice Site Selection and Factors Affecting Retention: A Survey of WV Rural Physicians." It may be viewed in Rooms 101 and 102 at General Hospital, the Board Room at Women and Children's Hospital and by "live" lecture in Room 2000 of the WVU Building next door to Memorial Hospital. Please RSVP to 388-9960 to be included in the lunch count. Lunch will be provided at all sites.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ALLERGY, ASTHMA AND IMMUNOLOGY (AAAAI) announces travel and housing grants to selected medical students for the 2003 60th Anniversary AAAAI Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, March 6-March 9, 2003. Applications must be postmarked or faxed by November 8, 2002. Applications are available in the Office of Student Services.

GOLD FOUNDATION ESSAY CONTEST: The Deadline has been extended to October 15. First Prize: $1,000., Second Prize: $500., Third Prize: $250., Theme A Humanistic Role Model in My Medical Career (students may be creative in how they define this person, it needn't be limited to a physician. Last year's first prize essay appears in the new issue of Academic Medicine, pg. 892-893. MOUNTAINEER WEEK: Craft Fair and Quilt Show, November 1,2,& 3, 2002. Traditional, Contemporary Crafts of Appalachia, Food, traditional music and demonstrations/exhibitions. Mountainlair, E.
