FAMILY HAPPENINGS:
NEW STUDENT LOUNGE by the old post office. All HSC students should now have access to the new student lounge brought to you by the HSC Administration and the HSC Student Advisory Board. The lounge is equipped with a flat screen TV (cable is still being worked on and will be ready soon), several kiosk stations (that will soon be equipped with desktop computers for internet access) and several chairs and tables to relax and take a break from the stresses of your academic endeavors. The lounge is only accessible by card swipe with your WVU ID. Please contact Cathy Patterson ( cpatterson@hsc.wvu.edu) with your last name, first name, and 700# if your card is not working. Please do your part to keep this area clean, and we hope to provide even more space for the students in the future.

NOTICES:
SHOT CLINIC: Dr. Cather will hold another shot workshop on November 12th at 3:00-6:00pm for interested medical students who will then be asked to help give immunizations for flu shot clinics across the campus in November and possibly December. Sign up at studentservicesmedicine@hsc.wvu.edu Class size is limited and first come-first served. You will receive a confirmation about whether you are in the class or not. The workshop will be held in the WellWVU Student Health Service conference room on the ground floor.

Health Care Reform Panel: The AMA-MSS will host a panel discussion on health care reform on Thursday, November 12, at 6:00 pm in Fukushima auditorium (HSC room 1901). We will cover a broad range of topics pertaining to reform. The panelists include: Dr. Norman Ferrari, MD; Dr. Joseph Selby, MD; Dr. Joel Yednock, MD; and Senator Evan Jenkins of the West Virginia State Senate.

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is pleased to announce its 2010 Student Summer Fellowship program! The Student Summer Fellowship grant award includes a $3,000 stipend for a 10 week period during which fellowship recipients undertake a research or service project focused on community health and cultural competency issues. http://www.humanism-in-medicine.org application deadline of Monday, March 1, 2010.

BIOINFORMATICS: Graduating students consider applying for a Biomedical Informatics Research Training (BIRT) program. Biomedical informatics is the convergence of biomedicine with a variety of technological and quantitative disciplines, including computer and information sciences, biostatistics, and cognitive science. Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year, with a start date of July 2010, are now being accepted. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2010. The BIRT program is funded by a grant from the NIH’s National Library of Medicine and is open to US citizens and permanent residents. http://bmiboston.org

What's Happening this Week - Morgantown:
AMSA: November 10th: AMSA "What the Heck Does that Mean?" Lunch lecture with Dr. John Guilfoose 12 noon in Room 1901.

APAMSA (the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association) Interest Group will be hosting a lunchtime meeting “Adjusting to Appalachia” on Monday, November 9th, at 12pm in the Fukushima Auditorium. Dr. Arif Sarwari, Medical Director of the Department of Medicine in Infectious Diseases, will be speaking about his experiences working as a non-native WV physician. This is a great opportunity to learn more about cultural diversity in medicine as well as for those who are interested in Infectious Diseases or related fields as Dr. Sarwari is well regarded in his field.

"The Rural Health Interest Group will be hosting Charleena Penama on November 9th at noon in Room 1905.
The title of her talk is "Responding to Cultural Concerns in Native American Health and Wellness" She will be speaking on health care delivery challenges and health issues in Native American communities. Ms. Penama is a member of the Salish nation in Montana and has worked tirelessly in public health programs on the Montana reservations. It will be a great discussion. Lunch will be provided. This is your opportunity to meet with representatives from the state’s Rural Health Consortium face-to-face. Be informed by checking out the different consortiums and their opportunities through the state RHEP website http://www.wvrhepahec.org/. The class will be submitting requests for your third year schedule, including your Family Medicine Rural Rotation, in February. Campus specific meetings will take place in January.
