Department of Surgery

General Surgery

The General Surgery Division is the largest within the Department, comprising the divisions of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, and General Surgery. Division faculty members offer expertise in the wealth and breadth of all aspects of general surgical care. More than 2,500 procedures are performed annually.

WVU’s general surgeons perform a wide range of basic and advanced procedures involving the foregut, midgut, and hindgut, as well as the breast, endocrine system, hematopoietic system, and other parts of the body. Each surgeon is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

In addition to building practices in their specific areas of clinical experience, General Surgery faculty members provide 24-hour surgical coverage for emergencies and staff WVU’s Medical Access and Referral Service (MARS) line for urgent patient transfers and consultation requests from around the state and region.

Many of WVU’s general surgeons are specialists in minimally invasive techniques that reduce pain, improve cosmesis, and shorten recovery periods for patients. Advanced imaging systems, specialized instruments, and computer-guided surgical navigation systems enhance surgeons’ ability to provide the latest and best in surgical care and the best possible outcomes for patients with an ever-increasing number of conditions and disorders. Endoscopic techniques and procedures are performed frequently in the WVU Digestive Disease Center in a collaborative atmosphere with the Division of Digestive Diseases, a regional leader in gastroenterological care.

Finally, General Surgery Division faculty members work closely with other specialists in a team approach to care, and make regular high-quality contributions to state, national, and international scientific committees and journals.
