Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) utilizes techniques and instruments, which allow surgeons to perform procedures through small, usually ¼-½ inch in size, or limited incisions. The smaller incisions allow for a faster recovery and less postoperative pain.

When MIS is used for abdominal surgery, a laparoscope is most commonly used. A laparoscope is a telescope designed for medical use. It is connected to a high intensity light and a high-resolution television camera so that the surgeon can see what is happening inside of you. The laparoscope is put into the abdominal cavity through a hollow tube placed through the abdominal wall and an image of the inside your abdomen is seen on the television screen. Using long thin surgical instruments placed through other tubes or cannulas (narrow tube-like instruments) in the abdominal wall, the surgeon can then perform a wide array of surgeries.
