Department of Surgery West Virginia University’s Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center, the only American College of Surgeons designated Level 1 trauma center in West Virginia, provides a full range of advanced trauma care for the people of the state and region. Faculty in the department also provide guidance to emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and flight nurses; collaborate with other specialists; co-manage the Surgical Intensive Care Unit; and provide wellness and injury prevention education. The Center cares for more than 3,000 trauma cases per year. In addition, faculty members attend in the adult Surgical ICU, manage emergency general surgery consults, and perform general surgery. General Surgery residents rotate on the Trauma and Critical Care Surgery service. Weekly educational offerings for residents include trauma conferences, teaching rounds, and presentations at departmental case conferences. Faculty in Plastic Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Radiology, and Emergency Medicine contribute skills and knowledge to the Trauma program. Trauma research is ongoing, and faculty regular present at regional trauma conferences. Trauma Center goals include: providing the highest level of trauma care to the people of the region; increasing knowledge about trauma care through research, education, and outreach; and strengthening the surgical critical care contribution to all patients.
