Letter from the Urology Residency Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the Urology Residency Training Program at West Virginia University. Our program serves the entire State of West Virginia. This dynamic program is fully accredited by the ACGME and accepts one resident per year for training. Residents are exposed to all aspects of Adult and Pediatric Urology. Chief residents graduate with more than 1200 cases performed. Pass rates on the American Board of Urology Examinations is 93%. The Division of Urology offers three elective rotations for medical students. We urge those students with a sincere interest in training with us to consider taking an elective rotation here. In the following paragraphs, our residency application process is described.
The Division of Urology strives to ensure a fair and non-discriminatory process for the selection of residents into the Urology training program. All applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Applicants also must register with the American Urological Association Matching Program. Information regarding participating in this program may be obtained by contacting the AUA Office of Education at (800) 282-7077, or by contacting their website at www.auanet.org.
The completed application will be reviewed by the Program Director and faculty. Candidates are selected on the basis of the above information. We typically receive approximately 120 applications for our one available position. Approximately 30 candidates are invited to participate in the interview process. The candidates are informed by letter or e-mail that they have been selected for an interview (on selected dates in November and December). Each candidate is given information regarding salary, benefits, local information, and lodging information at the time of interview.
All candidates meet with the Program Director, Division Chief, Urology faculty, and residents. They are evaluated on the application materials and overall impression during the interview. Residents are selected through the AUA Matching Program. A candidate will not be ranked on the match list unless he/she has had a formal interview.
After matching with the Division of Urology, the candidate must file an application with the Department of Surgery. All General Surgery must be completed at West Virginia University Affiliated Hospitals. West Virginia University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution and will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran status. We wish you the best of luck in the application process. Please feel free to contact us with any further questions you may have.
Best of luck,
