Apparel recycling efforts underway

You can clean out your closet, help the homeless, and keep a lid on our burgeoning landfills at the same time with the help of the annual A-WEAR-ness Campaign for the Homeless. WVU’s Fashion Design and Merchandising 235 class will again be collecting worn, unusable garments and textile products until Dec. 2. The shelter will then sell the bales to a recycling firm. Proceeds will then go to support mission programs and activities. Recyclable textiles accepted for donation include clothing, shoes, purses, belts, bed linens, blankets, towels, and stuffed toys. Drop-off boxes will be placed at various locations on and off campus. These include: the lobby of the Agricultural Sciences Building, the Blue and Gold Gate entrances of the Coliseum, the lobby of the Creative Arts Center, the Health Sciences Center (near the cafeteria and bookstore), the Mountainlair (near the information desk). Percival Hall, the Child Learning Center, the Student Recreation Center (outside, in the permanent blue bin), and the District. Since the campaign’s creation in 2005, over 82,000 pounds of textiles have been collected for redistribution and recycling. A permanent collection box has been installed at the Student Recreation Center on WVU’s Evansdale Campus, and a second will be placed at WVU’s Intermodal Facility. For information on the project, please visit http://www.design.wvu.edu/apparel_recycling or contact Vash at 304-293-3535 or via email at Tracy.Vash@mail.wvu.edu.

Community Service Clarifications from Associate Dean Shelton

1. Students in the BSN or BS/BA to BSN program cannot volunteer to give flu shots for community service hours unless they are accompanied by a clinical instructor or preceptor as part of a clinical rotation. This is a requirement of the WV Board of Nursing. 2. In order to be consistent with the other schools in the Health Sciences Center, the School of Nursing cannot give double community service hours unless all of the HSC schools agree on double hours. 3. In order for donations to count as community service, the donation must be worth at least $10 for 1 hour of community service. Donations that are worth more than $10 will still count as 1 hour of community service regardless of the size of the donation. Students can get ½ hour of community service for a $5 donation. No more than 10% of total community service hours may be from donations. 4. Community service hours are given for activities that provide a service to the community or to disadvantaged people. For example, you cannot earn community service hours for providing volunteer childcare to one of your friends or family members. But you could earn hours by providing childcare for a child with special needs or by volunteering to provide childcare at an event that benefits the community.

Part time help for elderly woman - Westover Area

A Mon County teacher is looking for a nursing student or students to assist his mother, an elderly woman who has had 3 bouts with pneumonia since January. She owns her own home and is pretty independent, but also is somewhat forgetful about taking her meds on time, and sometimes sleeps in and throws her medication schedule off. Her son is afraid she might not take the meds without some supervision in a timely manner. Her current helper has taken a full time job and this lady needs some help. She needs help with her 9am meds. The meds will be contained in a marked pill box and she just needs some supervision to make sure she takes them on time. She also takes 4 breathing treatments per day, but at this time, her son is looking for someone just to supervise her meds Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for the 9am meds. The rate of pay for this position is $10 per hour. The family would like one student, but understands that clinical times might make that difficult, so students who might like to work together as a team are welcome as well. If you are interested in this position or want more information, please call (304) 216-9753 (cel), (304) 599-3147 (home), or e-mail callancollins50@comcast.net.

WVU helping to ease the financial strain of college costs

WVU is introducing two new scholarships for students from West Virginia, increasing the value of other scholarships for students from all states and providing an additional $250,000 in need-based aid. Although the economy is improving, WVU recognizes that families may be faced with tough decisions when deciding how to pay for higher education. As the state’s premier university, WVU wants to ensure that students have every opportunity to attend WVU and have access to the University’s world-class facilities and faculty. The value of many existing scholarships for both in-state and out-of-state students have been increased. During the 2009-10 school year, WVU invested $1 million in aid for students facing difficult financial circumstances. An additional $250,000 has been allocated for these students during the 2010-11 school year. The University has also attempted to control tuition costs. WVU limited the tuition increase for 2009 to just 4 percent. This is 2.5 percent lower than the average increase for in-state students at public four-year colleges nationwide, according to The College Board. For more information on these and other scholarships offered by WVU, visit http://admissions.wvu.edu/undergraduate/finaid.

Heart Walk Pictures! The rainy weather didn't diminish our enthusiasm

We had witches and pirates and doctors and chickens and hot dogs oh my! Halloween morning saw a huge group of School of Nursing faculty, staff, students, family and pets walking for the American Heart Association. We had the biggest and the best team. We raised over $3400! One thing for sure - nursing dogs are the cutest dogs anywhere! They didn't let the rain bother them and they all enjoyed their treat bags. Many thanks to Roger Carpenter whose enthusiasm and hard work resulted in over 150 people signing up to walk and donating to the Heart Association. Graduate Assistants Genevieve Larrimer, Jen Molina and Sarah Rupe await the beginning of the Heart Walk Saturday, October 31. Our own Great Pumpkin is ready to walk for the American Heart Association. Stephanie Kainec and her winning Hot Dog! He was judged the Funniest! So cute and funny! Cutest! Funniest! Scariest! And absolute cutest Beagle! Great costumes for our contestants! Many thanks to all who brought their dogs out on a day that was just plain miserable! The pets brightened our day! A huge downpour could not wash away the enthusiasm and smiles from our wonderful group of School of Nursing walkers! The School of Nursing was named best team - there wasn’t even a close 2nd place! Brenda Deane’s granddaughter, Jolene, brightened our day and was our lucky bee! A minor wardrobe adjustment to his scrubs and this cutie was ready for his closeup! Roger Carpenter accepted the Best Team Award at the Heart Walk! He does an amazing job putting together a great team and raising big bucks every year! Good job, Roger! Even the best bumblebees have to keep their wings dry! Some of our pet contestants await their turns on the soggy runway! All of the dogs were absolutely adorable - we appreciate the hard work and ingenuity that went into making these little guys so darn cute! Cutest winner, Dr. Fendi and his “mom” Sarah Henson share their winning moment with Jolene, our bee! Some of our youngest Heart Walk participants - the rain didn’t bother them one bit! They really sank their teeth into the day! Rainy days are just great reasons to wear cool jackets! So cute! Nursing Students have the absolute cutest dogs - just huggable, every one of them! Kathleen Spadaro and her wonderful dog, Cosmo, “enjoy” the day with Susan and Richard McCrone. A Halloween Heart Walk is a great reason to go to your closet and get out your Sunday best! “Dr.” Fendi won the Cutest Dog Contest - his mom, Sarah, is so proud of him! We are so lucky to have so many wonderful people share their families and their Saturday with us! Great smiles run in the family! What a bummer! The Subway subs were “people” food! All of our pets got tiny treat bags as our small way of saying thank you for making our day! Kinda’ thinking this sandwich might have gotten shared! Dr. Claudia Brooks welcomes the hearty souls who volunteered their Saturday morning to raise money for the American Heart Association! Dogs just love hanging out with their owners - and the rain. . . . what rain? I got treats!

Toy Drive and Pet Food Drive Has Begun

A brightly decorated barrel has appeared in the Health Restoration Department. We're hoping to fill it up a few times with new toys (and very gently used toys) for low-income children in Mon County. Last year the toy drive provided toys for 899 children - that's a lot of need and a lot of smiles. While you're home for Thanksgiving break, think about picking up a little something for a deserving child. Pets of low income families can use your help as well. Please think about buying a few cans or a bag of cat or dog food for our pet food barrel. We can help the children and the pets who, through no fault of their own, live in difficult situations. Thanks so much!
