WVU School of Nursing Academic Faculty Practice
Established as a Task Force in 1993, the WVU School of Nursing Academic Faculty Practice
today is an unincorporated, primarily a contractual model of nursing practice with the major
purpose of supporting the educational, service, and research missions of the School of Nursing.
Key elements of the school's current academic faculty practice, include a director of
faculty practice, clinical track faculty guidelines for appointment and promotion,
credentialing of SON Advanced Practice Faculty by The West Virginia University Hospital's
Medical Staff Affairs, and joint academic appointments for faculty with The WVU School of Medicine.
Faculty Practice members are nationally certified and provide direct or indirect specialized
professional nursing services for individuals, families, groups, and communities. Encompassing
eighteen practice sites and twenty faculty members from both the Clinical and Tenure Tracks on
the Charleston and Morgantown campuses, the WVU School of Nursing Academic Faculty Practice has
clearly established itself as a partner in the health care delivery system and a leader for
professional advanced nursing practice in West Virginia. In addition, the Academic Faculty
Practice provides a vehicle for consultation regarding statewide issues related to advanced
practice nursing.
Through the provision of clinical services, the Academic Faculty Practice enhances and
maintains faculty clinical expertise, strengthens student education through role modeling,
and enables faculty to incorporate practice with research to extend the body of nursing knowledge.
