To Mary Fanning, BSN 1984, MSN 1988, whose poster was accepted for the Second Annual 2003 Summer Institute on Evidence-Based Practice in San Antonio, Texas.  Mary is Director, Adult Cardiac Nursing Units, WVUH; her presentation is titled:  “Nursing staff implements nursing practice change of early mobilization without incentive spirometry (IS) with the post cardiac surgery population.”

STUDENT APPRECIATION DAY 4/28/03:

The School of Nursing is celebrating its students on Monday, April 28, with a gift.  Stop by the display near the elevators at the School on the 6th floor and pick up your surprise.

 

GET THOSE TRANSCRIPTS SENT THIS SUMMER:

If taking courses at another college or university this summer, a transient form from Student Services must be completed before taking the course.  When the course is completed you must request that school send a transcript to Health Science Center Admission and Records.  You cannot get credit for the course unless a transcript is received. 

 

BYE-BYE ARTIFICIAL NAILS:

Ruby Hospital policy prohibiting artificial nails was implemented April 1, 2003 to eliminate a research documented source of bacterial infection for patients.  Natural nails are to be no longer than a quarter inch past the end of the finger.  Nail polish wearers must ensure polish is free of chips and cracks (how will you ensure that? Just don’t wear any!)

 

HELP JUNIOR TRACIE LEDBETTER HELP CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL:

Donate $2, $5, $7, or $10 to the “Ribs 4 Kids” and get a certificate good for a free dozen rolls, rib appetizer, ˝ slab of ribs, or full slab of ribs respectively from the Texas Roadhouse.  Contact Tracie at 598-8722 or 685-6287 or TML514WVU@yahoo.com or see her in class.  Help Children’s Hospital and get free eats too.

 

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CONVOCATION 5/17/03:

Help the graduates of 2002-2003 and usher for graduation convocation on Saturday, May 17, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  Community service hours will be earned.  Contact Dr. Gross at sgross@wvu.edu by 4/18 if you will help.

EVENING OF NURSING/JUDY KANDZARI SCHOLARSHIP DINNER 5/6/03:

Celebrate Nurses Week by attending a stellar program with dinner at the Ramada Inn May 6.  CEUs for RNs, scholarships awarded to students, panel of experts discuss “Medical Malpractice Insurance: Implications for Nurses” with Morgantown radio talk show host moderating.  Student registration $15.00.  See Gail VanVoorhis for more information.

PARKING PASSES FOR “THE PIT”:
Student Services has permits for Pit parking.  Take the permit to University Parking office in the Prete Building on University Ave. (across from the Japanese restaurant) and pay $150.00 for a permit good for a year.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
Relay for Life will be June 20th and 21st.  Gail VanVoorhis will be team captain; sign-up will start soon.  Watch for more details.

Class of 2004 students - Assist with bereavement phone calls to families of patients who were seen by the palliative care service and died while an inpatient at WV University Hospitals.  Training provided.  Average number of calls per month are 8-10; average length of call is 20 minutes.  Contact Linda McMillan in the Center for Health Ethics and Law at 293-7618.

Help March of Dimes improve the health of babies; before the March of Dimes’ Walk America on Saturday, May 17, take blood pressures of participants from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at “The Sunshade” behind the swimming pool at Krepps Park.  If you will help call Jane Dombroski now at 800-644-3488.

SCHOLARSHIPS:
Somerset Hospital Auxiliary is taking applications for annual Nursing Scholarship Program.  Somerset County residents eligible to apply for three $500 awards.  See SueAnn in Student Services for application; see Dr. Gross for help if needed.  Application deadline is May 23, 2003

ALUMNI NEWS:
Nilda (Nena) Guarda Perragalo, MSN 1979, has been appointed Dean of the University of Miami School of Nursing.  Professor Peragallo has a doctorate from the University of Texas School of Public Health and has taught at the nursing schools of University of Illinois, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Central Florida.
