CONGRATULATIONS:
To Emily Flanagan, BSN December 2005. During her rural rotation in Fall '05, Emily was assigned to McDowell County. She chose as her capstone project to lead a campaign to educate and inform the public about the need for a no smoking ordinance. She did much work providing education to community groups, business leaders, and local government officials. She has received word that the ordinance passed and effective July 1, McDowell County will be smoke free!! Emily was largely responsible for this change.
NIGHTENGALE CIRCLE INDUCTION:
The Nightingale Circle Induction will be held Wednesday, April 19, at 5 pm in John Jones Conference Center with a reception immediately following. The School of Nursing has created the Nightingale Circle, to honor and recognize alumni and friends who have given generously of their time, talent, and treasure to further nursing study at WVU. Membership is by invitation only, and is reserved for alumni and friends who have demonstrated a continued commitment to financial and other support of the School of Nursing. Nightingale Circle members serve as School of Nursing ambassadors and advisors in their workplace and community, providing an important link with those we serve. The ceremony on April 19th is the first for the Nightingale Circle. In recognition of Anna Mary Miller’s devotion to the school, she will be inducted posthumously into this honor society.
AWARDS AND HONORS CELEBRATION:
The School of Nursing Awards and Honors Celebration will be held on April 20, 7 pm to 9 pm, in the HSC Main Auditorium. The event will begin with the Kandzari Nursing Lectureship, presented by Lois Evans, DNSc, FAAN, RN. Dr. Evans is a distinguished teacher, researcher, scholar, practitioner, and administrator. She is currently the Viola MacInnes/Independence Professor of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She will present a paper titled, "Rural Health Nursing: Connecting in a Connected Age." Induction of new members into the Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and recognition of student and faculty achievement will follow Dr. Evan's presentation. The event will commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Alpha Rho Chapter. All nursing students, family members, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the program and the reception that will follow in the Pylon Lobby of the Health Sciences Center North.
RURAL HEALTH POSTER PRESENTATION:
The Rural Health Students will be presenting their Capstone Projects by Poster Presentation on April 20 and 21. We would like to invite faculty and students to come by and view these great posters and discuss the projects with the Rural students. They have worked very hard this semester and the posters are a product of their experiences. The Junior students should be especially interested in this presentation as it will give them a preview of rural health. The Posters will be presented on April 20th from 10-12 and 1- 3 and April 21 from 10-12. They will be on view in the Health Promotion Conference Room (Room 6522); the Health Promotion Library and Health Promotion “Open Area”; Academic Affairs Conference Room (Room 6419); and the Sigma Theta Tau Conference Room (Room 6522).
ONLINE STAT 211:
STAT 211 will be offered online in Summer Session B (July 3-August 11), and in the Fall 2006 semester. The sections are listed as Off Campus courses and are offered through Extended Learning. The Fall section will be designed specifically for health professionals. Students who are interested in registering for the Fall section should submit their names to Terry Shaeiwitz at tshaeiwitz@hsc.wvu.edu as soon as possible.
SCHOOL OF NURSING WEBSITE CHANGES:
The School of Nursing website homepage has been streamlined to better conform to university guidelines. Please note the menu located on the top, left of the homepage (next to the photo).
Major Changes:
- The disappearance of the ‘Student Resources’ link in the sidebar. The ‘Current Students’ link on top will offer everything ‘Student Resources’ has in the past and more.
- ‘Alumni Affairs’ will be removed from the sidebar. All alumni information can be found at the ‘Alumni’ link below ‘Faculty & Staff’ on the top.
- The faculty & staff directory will be available through the ‘Faculty & Staff’ link as well as from the ‘Offices & Departments’ link.
PASTORAL CARE GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE:
A Good Friday service sponsored by the Pastoral Care department will be held on Friday, April 14th at 12pm in John Jones 1, 2, 3. All are welcome.
CAREERS IN AGING EVENT:
Interested in a career in aging or aging-related issues? Come to the Annual WVU Careers in Aging Event, Monday April 17, 2006, HSC Hostler auditorium, ,6:30 pm - Social Hour (Refreshments provided, 7:00 pm - Guest Speakers, Q & A session. Speakers include Suzanne Messenger, Ombudsman Attorney for Seniors, Cathy McConnell, Executive Director of WV Senior Legal Aid, and Tracey Mascola, Hospice Care Corporation. Hosted by the WVU Gerontological Society of America's student group and Sigma Phi Omega, Delta Kappa Chapter.
Rx FOR CHILD SURVIVAL:
Rx for Child Survival is a group that raises money to send to underdeveloped countries to pay for medications for needy children. The group is trying to stretch masking tape around town on April 19, and have people donate their spare change, and place it on the tape. They will stretch masking tape for a MILE (Yes, 5280 feet) and fill it with change! Watch for signs about the event and the masking tape on the 6th floor and place your spare change of the tape.
SNA CANDLE SALE:
The SNA is starting NOW working toward the 2007 trip to California. Our first fund raiser is a candle sale. They are set up in the lab right now and you can come sniff all the great scents and buy them to take. We have limited numbers of each. Two sizes: jelly jar ($6) and Apothecary ($12). They are made locally and are of high quality. Don't forget: Mother's Day is coming. Call first (293-0298) to ensure someone is in the lab to take your money!!
PRIMARY CARE OF CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE;
A free, CME/CE event will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences/Walker Theater, One Clay Square, Charleston. Reception begins at 5 pm, and program is from 5:30-7:30 pm. Topics will include the challenge of chronic kidney disease, assessment of GFR, clinical practice guidelines, and hypertension and the chronic kidney disease patient. Pre-registration is required. NEW COLOR SCANNER IN LIBRARY:
The Health Sciences Library has replaced its digital sender with a new color scanner. Items scanned can be emailed as an attachment or downloaded to a USB drive or a CD. Directions for use are located next to the new equipment, and the staff at the Reference or Circulation
Desks will be glad to answer questions about it.
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
Volunteers (sophomore-senior) are needed to help with the spring fitness and wellness fair. It will take place at the WVU Mountainlair from 11am-3pm on April 20th. We will be doing blood pressures. Contact Gail VanVoorhis for more information.
Brookhaven Elementary is looking for nursing students who would be willing to tutor elementary math (2nd-5th grades) 30 mins-1 hour. The teachers will develop the lesson plan. Service hours will be awarded. Please contact Amy Sparks at asparks@hsc.wvu.edu if you are interested.
Reach Out and Read is a nation-wide, non-profit organization that promotes the importance of reading to children. Volunteers read to children while they are waiting to see the doctor, as well as helping children complete fun activities that will help them develop important motor skills. After their appointments, children receive their own book to take home. You can volunteer to read at the Clark K. Sleeth Family Medicine Center. Contact Rose Hildebrand at bhildebr@mix.wvu.edu.
Walk-the-Walk 9th Annual Race-Walk Two Mile Relay, sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Monongalia County, will be held Saturday, May 6, 2006. Two-person teams will be formed on race day, but you may request your race partner. Meet at Chestnut Ridge Hospital picnic shelter, with registration at 9:30 and race at 11. Course is a flat, one-mile protected course located around Ruby Hospital parking lot. Entry fee is $10 if received or postmarked by April 14, or $12 after April 14 or on day of race.
