FIRST YEAR AND RETURNING STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO SIGN UP FOR TEXT MESSAGE ALERT SYSTEM University Police are encouraging first-year and returning students to sign up for WVU Alert, a Web-based emergency notification system implemented last year. The system employs text messaging - the most popular means of communication among today's students - to warn faculty, staff and students about any act that puts the WVU community in imminent danger. This includes major crimes, emergencies and weather delays. To sign up, students can go to Mountaineer Information Xpress (MIX) and click on the emergency alert system icon. Faculty and staff should go to http://emergency.wvu.edu/alert. Some 9,840 people are signed up for WVU Alert. The service is provided by e2Campus, with technical support from WVU Web Services. WVU regularly tests the system by sending out a mock alert. The next test is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2. More information will be forthcoming. In addition to signing up for WVU Alert, University Police also suggest students adopt some common-sense safety habits to prevent being victims of a crime. These safety measures include locking residences and vehicles, walking in groups, avoiding dimly lit areas, being responsible when it comes to drinking alcohol and refraining from sharing credit/debit cards or personal identification numbers. A complete list of safety tips is available at http://police.wvu.edu/StayingSafe.cfm. GREAT MUSIC FEST TO SUPPORT CANCER CENTER COMFORT FUND A mix of blues, bluegrass and Appalachian music will resound from the hills of Chestnut Ridge Park in Bruceton Mills on Saturday, Sept. 6, during a concert to benefit patients at West Virginia University's Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center (MBRCC). The second annual Comfort Music Fest will feature headliner Stewed Mulligan, an Appalachian string band that blends old backwoods sound with country rock. Bluegrass pickers The Halftime String Band will be back along with Tanglewood, a bluegrass and blues band. The Rust Kings will perform Appalachian stomp-grass. Two-time national old-time banjo champion Vince Farsetta will complete the lineup. Gates open at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and may be purchased by calling Lori Mugnano at 304-293-7495. Tickets are also available at Black Bear Burritos on Pleasant Street in Morgantown. Tickets at the gate will be $12.50. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free, but a donation would be appreciated. Concert t-shirts may be purchased at the event. All proceeds will go to the Cancer Center's Comfort Fund that was established to financially assist patients being treated at the Cancer Center Clinic. The money raised through the concert will provide temporary, short-term assistance for medications, lodging and other needs and will help relieve the financial stress that many patients experience dealing with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. The daylong concert also will include several food vendors and a kids' station. Concertgoers are welcome to bring lawn chairs. MOUNTAINEER VISITATION DAY TOUR GUIDE WVU's Office of New Student Orientation is seeking outgoing individuals who love WVU and wish to make a difference for future students of WVU by becoming a Mountaineer Visitation Day tour guide. The office will be hiring approximately 15 to 20 students to serve as student tour guides for West Virginia University's Mountaineer Visitation Days (MVDs). MVDs are open houses for prospective students and their families. By attending a Mountaineer Visitation Day, prospective students are able to experience firsthand the exciting programs WVU has to offer its students. During their visit, they will have the opportunity to speak with various faculty members and students, tour the campus, and visit one of our residence halls for lunch. Candidates should have excellent communication and listening skills, be able to work independently without direct supervision, and have a desire to represent WVU. For more information and to apply please visit our website at http://www.arc.wvu.edu/new_student_orientation/tour_guide_info.htm EMPLOYMENT, SCHOLARSHIPS, COMMUNITY SERVICE AND VOLUNTEER HOURS/OPPORTUNITIES!
