 WELCOME TO ALL NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS AND FACULTY!!!

 

CONGRATULATIONS:

To faculty members Dr. Nan Leslie and Dr. Susan McCrone, who were elected to the National Academies of Practice as distinguished practitioners.  The National Academies of Practice encompass 10 areas of health care practice, including nursing.  Drs. Leslie and McCrone will be inducted into the Academies at a banquet on November 6, 2004, in Alexandria, Virginia. 

 
REMINDERS – CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS AND STUDENT HANDBOOK:

All sophomores and juniors are required to submit fingerprinting cards for Criminal Background Checks to the Office of Student Services by Friday, August 27.  You will not be permitted to go to Clinicals until the fingerprinting cards have been submitted.

 

Sophomores are also reminded that the signature page from the Undergraduate Student Handbook is due in the Office of Student Services by Friday, August 27.


HIPAA TRAINING:

Sophomores will be receiving an email message from Lisa Vidovich with instructions for completing HIPAA training online.  There is also be instructions for online submission of  verification of training.  This verification must be submitted by September 3, 2004.


LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION:

The HSC library is undergoing extensive renovation to become a state of the art facility.  During the renovation and construction, the library staff is committed to continuing to provide services to students and faculty.  To find out more about the project, visit http://www.hsc.wvu.edu/library/construction.htm.  There is also a website that gives alternative study and work areas at http://www.hsc.wvu.edu/library/alternative-study-locations.htm


VOTER REGISTRATION:

There will be a voter registration booth in the Health Sciences South Cafeteria 11-1 on Wednesday, 8/25, and 12-1 on Friday, 8/27.  The last day to register for the November election is October 13th, and this is a convenient way to register.

 
SNA PICNIC:

Join students and faculty at the SNA Picnic on Tuesday, August 32, from 5 pm to ??? at Krepp’s Park.  This is a great opportunity to see old friends, make new ones, and talk to faculty in a fun setting away from class and clinical.

 

SOPHOMORE INDUCTION 9/17/04:

Save the date of Friday, September 17, 2004, at 7 pm for the Sophomore Induction ceremony to be held in the Health Sciences Auditorium, with a reception to follow in the lobby.  This year, 105 sophomores will be welcomed into the profession of nursing, our largest class ever!  The event is held during Fall Family Weekend.

 

SHOW YOUR WVU PRIDE ON BLUE AND GOLD DAY, 8/27/04:

Kick off the new school year by wearing your WVU pride on your sleeve.  Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to dress in their favorite WVU attire on Blue and Gold Day, Friday, August 27.

 
GETTING TEE’D OFF ABOUT RAPE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!

The WVU Student Nurses Association is hosting its charity golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Preston County Country Club, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Rape and Domestic Violence Center of Morgantown.  Cost is $85 per person for a best ball, scramble and buffet dinner, with chicken, roast beef, potatoes, vegetables and desserts.  There will be 25 groups with 4 people on a team, and lots of fantastic prizes and give-aways during the tournament.  You’re guaranteed a great time when you team up and tee off with the Student Nurses Association.  To sign up your team, or for more information, call Betty Jurick at 293-2802.  Hole sponsorship is $100. 


SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has announced the availability of $10,000 scholarships for nurse practitioner students.  To be eligible, students must be in the final year of a primary care educational program for nurse practitioners.  Program participants are required to practice primary care for a minimum of two years in an underserved area of West Virginia upon completion of training, or teach in an approved undergraduate nursing program in the state for at least two years.  The application deadline is October 15, 2004, and   application packets are available in the Office of Student Services. 


COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

Student volunteers needed to care for hospice patient in her home afternoons for several hours, beginning as soon as possible.  Minimal physical care is required, but help is needed with meal preparation and just being a presence in the home.  For more information contact Sharon Shaver at 296-6371.

 

After school volunteers are needed to care for the 13 year old, semi-disabled son of a single mother in Cheat Lake.  He uses a wheelchair for transport, but does not require its use in his home.  Job consists of getting him off the school bus and watching him from 3 pm to 5:30 pm.  Possible diaper change would be required, but otherwise he does not require much assistance.  For more information, call Sharon Offutt at 598-2200, ext 135 (work) or 594-3836 (home after 5:30 pm). 


FACULTY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:

A graduate of another nursing program would like to pay for faculty tutoring for NCLEX.  Interested faculty should contact Dr. Nancy Alfred at 293-1784, nalfred@hsc.wvu.edu.

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Immediate need for an undergraduate student to work as a Research Assistant for the AKNee Exercise and Expectations (KNEE) study in the Department of Orthopaedics.  Duties include telephone interviewing, scoring of questionnaires, assembling of mailings, clerical tasks, and computer entry.  Hours are flexible (10-12 hours/week), including occasional evenings.  Ethics training and a training session at the beginning of employment are required.  Must have experience in basic computer software (eg. Word, Excel).  Pay is $7/hour.  Interested students should email a brief statement describing background and interest in the position, and a resume (if available), to Ms. Suzanne Smith at Ssmith@hsc.wvu.edu, 293-2970.
