CONGRATULATIONS:

To Lisa Vidovich who became a first time grandmother on January 26.  Lisa reports John Paul, 8 lb 7oz, 20 “,  mother Beckey, and dad Paul are all thriving and enjoying life as a family.

 

LAST CALL--ExSTRESS YOURSELF WITHOUT CHARGE 2/5:

In six noontime classes in John Jones Conference Room A participants will learn how to decide for themselves how much stress they choose to experience day-to-day.  These free classes from noon to 1 pm (bring your own lunch) start Feb. 5 and are offered for six consecutive Wednesdays.  Registration is optional but requested call 293-2520; for more info visit www.sbiih.org.

 

CENTER FOR WOMEN’S STUDIES TEACHING LUNCH 2/6:

Call Marlene Robinson at 293-2339X1153 and reserve space at Café of India for dutch treat lunch at 11:30 a.m.  Topic:  “Intergrating Race, Class, and Gender in the Classroom.”

 

CENTER FOR WOMEN’S STUDIES FIRESIDE CHAT 2/6:

Christine Martin, Dean of School of Journalism and Maryanne Reed, faculty in School of Journalism, will speak at 4 p.m. in Betty Boyd Lounge of E. Moore Hall.  Topic:  “Bylines as lifelines:  Love, loss and sisterhood on the Ho Chi Minh trail.”

 

UPDATE - NURSE UNITY DAY AT THE CAPITOL 2/13:

Students need to discuss going to Unity Day with any instructor whose class they would miss; bonus points may be given in return for a report on Unity Day activities / issues.  Registration form is in the WV Nurse paper that is in each department.  Students pay $18.00 for registration which includes lunch.  Checks should be made out to WVNA and be given to faculty member Gail VanVoorhis before January 31.  Dean Martin will once again supply a bus for transport to Charleston. Faculty that will be going can also give Ms. VanVoorhis  their registration information and need to let her know if they will be taking the bus.  The bus will leave from the Pylon entrance at about 6am and return home about 8-9pm. To become familiar with issues being presented in this legislative session students and faculty can log onto the website and keep current.  www.legis.state.wv.us/  Any questions call Gail VanVoorhis at 293-0298.

 

ALL INVITED TO AORN PROGRAM 2/18:

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses invites all students and faculty to a special program presentation by national officer Debbie Tanner:  “Professionalism and the RN=Real Nurse.”  Come Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6:30 pm in the WV Eye Institute Conference Center.  Parking is free, light refreshments will be served, CE available for RNs.  Contact Cathy Whitesides at cswrnbsn@att.net if attending.

 

BUY THOSE TICKETS FOR STUDENT DANCE 2/22:

The nursing formal will be held at Levels on Saturday, Feb. 22.  Tickets are $22.00 for single person, $40.00 a couple.  Each student may invite 3 non-nursing friends.  Give ticket money to Junior Brandi Goss or Senior Holly Wotring or to faculty member Jennifer Stewart-Glenn room 6613 Dept. of Health Restoration.  Can buy tickets up to Feb. 17.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS:

West Virginia Nurses Association Vance Scholarship program has funds available to assist a limited number of eligible students.  Eligibility requirements include: a native West Virginian; accept employment as a nurse in West Virginia for one year after passing boards; have two character references; be a member of WVSNA or WVNA.  Applications must be post marked on or before march 10, 2002.  If you have submitted a School of Nursing application for Scholarship consideration and want to be considered for this Vance Scholarship, e-mail Dr. Gross :  sgross@wvu.edu     

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

ALUMNI NEWS:

Malene Davis, BSN 1984, MSN 1994, executive director of Hospice Care, has been re-elected to the Board of Directors of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization for a second term.  When Malene first joined Hospice Care, it  served one county.  It now serves patients and their families in eight counties:  Barbour; Marion; Monongalia; Preston; Randolph; Taylor; Tucker; and Wetzel.
