To Seniors Alison Barrington and Sarah Gandee, winners of the WVRHEP’s 2002 Outstanding Contribution Award for the category “Outstanding Student Community Service Project” for their project “TATU-Teens Against Tobacco Use.” This award is competitive for all rural health students in all health professions. Factors taken into consideration in determining student winners include: community support and involvement leading to improved health outcomes; number of community members impacted; coordination of efforts with existing health promotion programs; community innovations; and effective networking at the local level. The award has been given annually since 1997; from then until now, Medical students received it four times, dental students once, and Nursing students once. Alison and Sarah conducted their project during their clinical practice with Mountain Health Consortium in Grafton, WV. Dr. Debra Harr was faculty mentor and Ms. Brandi Chandler, RN, was agency preceptor. The State Advisory Panel of the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnerships recognized Alison and Sarah at an awards presentation in Charleston, February 10.
