To faculty whose research was selected for presentation at the Southern Nursing Research Society 17th Annual Conference, “Mentoring in Research,” Feb. 13-15 in Orlando, Florida:

Dr. June H. Larrabee—“Evaluating Patients’ Perspectives of Nursing Care Quality.”

Dr. June R. Lunney—“Personal Care Requirements in the Last Year of Life.”

Dr. Barbara L. Nunley—“Stress, Hardiness, and Psychological Distress of Elderly Spousal Caregivers of Persons with Dementia.”

LAST CALL—UNDERGRADS EXPECTING TO GRADUATE IN MAY:

See Mrs. Lisa Vidovich to complete your application for graduation and alumni forms now.  A $30 graduation fee must be paid at this time.  NCLEX packets with application to State Board are available now.  The State Board deadline for submitting the Application for Licensure by Examination for May graduates is April 1st.  If you miss this deadline you will be very delayed in receiving temporary license and in taking the exam.

 

ALL STUDENTS GRADUATING IN MAY, AUGUST, OR DECEMBER:

The deadline for ordering a School of Nursing pin from Balfour is Friday, Feb. 28.  Return completed order forms to Student Services; extra forms are available in Student Services.

 

ACADEMIC GOWNS:

Graduating students wear academic regalia for the School of Nursing convocation ceremony 5/17 and the University graduation 5/18.  Gowns will be available from the HSC bookstore in April.

 

VOTE FOR STUDENT GOVERNMENT BY MIX 2/25-2/27:

Log on to you Mix account.  Click SGA elections icon.  At next log-in page your user name is the first initial of your first name plus your entire last name.  Your password is your six digit date of birth.  Yes, candidate Anna McCarty is a daughter of our faculty member Diana McCarty.

 

WVU HONORARIES’ APPLICATIONS ONLINE:

Go to www.honors.wvu.edu for applications; applications are also available through MIX.  Credit hours considered are only those earned while at WVU.  Helvetia, Sophomore honorary, requires min. 3.3 GPA and 29-58 hours of credit by end of semester.  Chimes, Junior honorary, requires min. 3.3 GPA and 59-88 hours by end of semester.  Students with min. 3.4 GPA, at least 89 credit hours at end of spring 2003 and graduation date no earlier than December 2003 can apply for the Mortar Board honorary.

 

HELP WVU WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM FIGHT CANCER:

Women’s soccer is doing fundraising for the Claudia Mayer Breast Cancer Foundation in Maryland.  To raise as much money as possible they will participate in a soccer tournament, hold a “Women’s Soccer Player Challenge,” and hold a soccer clinic for children.  You can help by donating money or sponsoring prenursing soccer player Ashley Weimer in the soccer player challenge.  If interested email Ashley at aweimer1@mix.wvu.edu or Rokstar22@aol.com  Any donation will be greatly appreciated.

 

SNA MEETING 3/3:

4:00 pm in 2118 HSC North (Path Amphitheater), no pizza but student movers and shakers will be there.  Participate!

 

REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER AND FALL (THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE COURSE):

Priority for nursing is March 24.  Student Services will register all basic undergrads into Nursing courses; students are responsible for registering for non-nursing courses.  Advisors will have pin numbers by 3/6.  Make an appointment with your advisor for council and to get your pin number.  RN students and Grad students register themselves for all courses after consultation with advisor.

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

Scott’s Run Settlement House has many different kinds of opportunities for Community Service.  Contact Susan Blosser, Volunteer Coordinator, at 599-5020.

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

$7.00/hr to care for elderly woman in own home 5:00 pm-10:00 pm Mon.-Fri. / Sat. and Sun. approximately noon – 10:00 pm.  Flexible on scheduling, take some or all shifts.  Call daughter Joan at 599-4521.

ALUMNI NEWS:

Alice Vernon, BSN 2000, was pictured in The Dominion Post, Sunday, Feb. 23, giving a massage to an 8 year old attending the Health Fair 2003 at the Morgantown Mall.  Alice is Coordinator of the Center for Complementary Medicine of Monongalia Health System.
