CONGRATULATIONS:
To Dr. Cynthia Persily, Associate Dean for Southern Academic Affairs and Chairperson, Charleston Division, who was awarded the "Politically Active Nurse of the Year Award" last week by the West Virginia Nurses Political Action Committee. This award was given in recognition of Dr. Persily’s work with the Center for Nursing legislation and for educating legislators and the public about issues concerning nursing workforce.

BLOOD EARNS 3 SERVICE HOURS 2/19/04:
Give blood in John Jones Conference Center Feb. 19 and earn 3 community service hours for this blood drive only. The schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy are sponsoring this blood drive. Hours open are 11:00 am to 5:00 pm; call 598-4095 to schedule appointment.

NURSING FORMAL 2/21/04:
Join your buddies at the nursing formal in Levels VIP Lounge from 7:00 pm-10:00 pm, Saturday February 21st. $22.00 singles; $40.00 couples; up to 3 non-nursing guests for each nursing student. Appetizers and draft beer provided. Must pay by February 17th; make check payable to Student Nurses Association and give it to Betty Jurick in Health Restoration or to one of your class representatives.

SIGMA THETA TAU MEETS 2/17/04:
Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honorary, will hold a business meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in John Jones Conference Center from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.

SENIORS – FREE NCLEX WORKSHOP 2/28/04:
West Virginia University Hospitals is holding a free workshop Saturday, Feb. 28, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm in WVU Eye Institute Auditorium (2nd floor). For more info and to register contact WVUH Human Resources, 598-4075 (1-800-453-5708) or

GOOD WOMEN’S CLOTHING STILL NEEDED:
Health Restoration is collecting good women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, scrubs, and nurse shoes to the end of February. See Betty Jurick if you have questions.

GLOBAL HEALTH DAY 3/19/04:
Karen Kasmauski, photographer with National Geographic Magazine, and Dr. Margaret Kitt who has worked in Afganistan and other countries will speak Friday, March 19, from 12 noon to 2:30 pm. Music, food, and displays will also be available. Watch for announcement of meeting place.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS:
Student Services has applications for the Bernice L. Vance Scholarship and the Hadassah Scholarship. For the Vance, you are eligible to apply if you are a West Virginia resident, intend to work in West Virginia for at least one year after licensed, and are a member of WVSNA or WVNA. For the Hadassah, you can apply if you are a West Virginia resident and are willing to meet five other requirements. See Brandy in Student Services for application materials. Completed applications due back to Dr. Gross no later than march 5, 2004. For info contact Dr. Gross, 293-1386 or in person.

JUDY KANDZARI SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SENIORS IN RURAL HEALTH:

ALUMNI NEWS:
Alison Barrington, BSN 2003, writes Seattle, Washington, is the "coolest city" she’s ever been to. Work in the medical/surgical/transplant ICU has those days that scare her to death but for the most part she is feeling more and more comfortable in her role. She adds "Through work I can tell that I received a great education at a great institution! So thank you!!! I feel well-rounded and feel that I have a rather strong base of knowledge…just enough of everything…except for ekg’s…"
