UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS GRADUATING IN MAY:
The application for graduation and diploma and the alumni database form must be completed by March 1. Come to Student Services to get your graduation packet which will include licensure and NCLEX information. You will need to bring a check for $30 payable to WVU with “graduation fee” written in the memo section of your check. Students in Rural Health can call Student Services at 293-1386 and request that the packet be mailed to them. The representative to order School of Nursing pins will be outside the HSC bookstore on Feb. 22. You may stop by and order your pin that day or use the order form in the packet. Deadline to order a pin is March 1. August graduates participating in the May ceremony will receive information at a later date. You do not need to complete forms or order a pin at this time.
UNDERGRADUATE FALL 2005 REGISTRATION:
If you have a special need (band, track, etc.) for the fall 2005 please send an email to Mrs. Vidovich at lvidovich@hsc.wvu.edu .
WVU ID CARD PICTURES:
All WVU faculty, staff and students - who have not had their photos taken since May 2002 and plan to return in the Fall - must do so by March 15 for the changeover to the new WVUID. Photo sessions have been scheduled for the Health Sciences Center Feb. 21-23 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the John Jones Conference Center, Dining Room B. SCRUBS CLOTHING DRIVE:
The School is participating in the clothing drive for the Women's Career Clothing Closet, sponsored by Christian Help. This organization's goal is to nurture self confidence in local employment-seeking/underemployed women by providing them with FREE professional clothing (including scrubs!), resume assistance and job skills/computer training referrals. A box is located in the front of Health Restoration to gather clothes, accessories, shoes, etc. Items will be collected through the end of February. This is a great way to clean out closets and help someone a whole lot less fortunate.
SNA FORMAL:
The SNA formal is February 26 from 7-11 pm in the upstairs of De Lazy Lizzard. Faculty, staff and students alike should plan to attend. It is a blast! Dress can be formal to just dressy. Cost is $45 a couple and $25 for singles. Dinner will be provided, along with dancing and drink specials! Make checks payable to SNA and put in the treasurer's mailbox in the SNA workspace on the 6th floor. Please have money in by February 18.
BSN SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
Current sophomores and juniors in the BSN program are encouraged to apply for the West Virginia Nurses Association Vance Scholarship. Eligible applicants are native West Virginians, members of SNA or WVNA, and must agree to accept employment in West Virginia for one year after passing the NCLEX. Application materials are available from Brandy in the Office of Student Services. The deadline for submission is March 21, 2005.
The Clarksburg League for Service Nursing Scholarship is open to sophomore students who are graduates of a Harrison County high school or are residents of Harrison County. Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded to West Virginia nursing students. Applications are available from Brandy in Student Services, and must be submitted by February 24, 2005.
GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP:
Scholarships are available for full-time MSN and full or part-time DSN students, awarded by Nurses’ Educational Funds, Inc. Deadline for applications is March 1, 2005. For additional information or an application, visit the website at www.n-e-f.org.
NCLEX REVIEW COURSE:
A free NCLEX Workshop will be offered by WVUH on Saturday, February 26, from 8:30 to 3 pm. Meet in the Lobby at Ruby Memorial. To register, contact WVU Hospitals Human Resources Department, (304) 598-4075 / 1-800-453-5708.
INFUSION SYMPOSIUM:
The conference "Infusion Symposium for Hospitals & Home Health Agencies" will occur on March 5th at Lakeview Resort & Conference Center. WVUH is sponsoring this conference & lunch will be provided if you attend both morning & afternoon sessions. The morning session focuses on Current Litigation with Central Line & PICC Therapy. The afternoon session will then focus on the clinical management of these lines in the home and hospital setting. Cost is $20 for WVUH employee and nursing students, $30 for HSC & WVU employees, & $40 for Non-WVUHS participants. Call 598-4063 to register.
BLOOD DRIVE:
The February Blood Drive will be on Thursday, February 24, 2005 from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the John Jones Conference Center. This drive is sponsored by the schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. THREE (3) COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS will be given to donors. The extra hours are offered for this one-time (once yearly) blood drive. Give the gift of life and schedule an appointment at www.redcrosslife.org.
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
Volunteers are needed to sit outside the Mountainlair on March 1st and do blood pressures. Our booth is for National Eating Disorder's Awareness Week. There are lots of activities downtown that week. The booth will be from 10 am to 2pm. Two hour blocks would be great, but anything is negotiable. Contact Joanne Watson at home @ 599-7772 or email, jewatson@hsc.wvu.edu.
The diabetes education center at WVUH is having a diabetes health fair on 4/6/05 from 10 am to 3 pm in the John Jones Center. Student volunteers are needed to do blood pressures and fingers sticks. For more information or to sign up contact Judy Klingensmith at KlingensmithJ@rcbhsc.wvu.edu
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) has a job opening for a student medical assistant. Under the supervision of the RN Research Coordinators, the student will assist with blood collection, interviewing study patients, taking vital signs, etc. The student will also assist with documenting study patient information, and clinical data gathering from patients’ charts. This is a per diem position (10-20 hrs) and hours will be flexible depending on the student’s availability and CTRU needs. Pay is $8.74 hr. Although we prefer to have the student over the summer, this is not mandatory. This is a wonderful opportunity for a nursing student to gain experience with a wide variety of patients and learn more about research. A summer Externship program is available at WVUH. BSN candidates must show evidence of successfully completing their junior year. The Nurse Externs perform direct and indirect patient care in a selected area with the assistance and supervision of a staff registered nurse who functions as a mentor to promote high quality care. Rate of pay will be $10/hour for a commitment beginning in May or June 2005.
