UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS GRADUATING IN MAY:
The application for graduation and diploma and the alumni database form must be completed by March 1.  Come to Student Services to get your graduation packet which will include licensure and NCLEX information.  You will need to bring a check for $30 payable to WVU with “graduation fee” written in the memo section of your check.  Information about ordering the School of Nursing pin will also be in the packet.  Students in the Rural Health rotation who want to have the packet mailed to them should contact Student Services at 293-1386 as soon as possible.  August graduates are also eligible to participate in the May ceremony.  You will receive graduation and licensure information at a later time.  However, if you want to participate in the May ceremony, please stop by Student Services to complete the pin information form.

BSN FALL COURSES:
The Office of Student Services will soon begin scheduling students for Fall nursing courses.  If you have a request for a specific rotation or for particular clinical days, please notify Mrs. Shaeiwitz at tshaeiwitz@hsc.wvu.edu

MSN ALUMNI LEADERSHIP AWARD:

Each year, the WVU School of Nursing Alumni Association awards an Alumni Leadership Award to a graduating MSN student who exhibits the following characteristics: 

1. Models professional advanced practice in nursing to his/her peers

2. Influences peers, colleagues, consumers and clients to value advanced practice nursing as a profession

3. Accepts responsibility and accountability as a leader and client advocate for the nursing profession

4. Demonstrates the potential and commitment to advancing nursing as a profession

One award is provided for a Morgantown based student, and one for a Charleston based student. The recipients will receive their awards at the Spring Honors and Awards ceremony on April 20, 2006 in Morgantown.

Awardees are selected through student nomination. Please consider nominating yourself or one of your peers who has exhibited these leadership competencies throughout your MSN program. Morgantown based students should nominate one of their peers in Morgantown, and Charleston based students should do likewise.  Letters of nomination will be accepted until March 10, 2006. You should address your letter to Dr. Cynthia Persily, and email it to cpersily@hsc.wvu.edu

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
An application for the Greta B. Stevens Scholarship has been e-mailed to all Charleston Students.  If you have not received the application, please contact Dianne Griffith at 347-1398 or dgriffith@hsc.wvu.edu.  Deadline for application is March 10th.

The Rose Marie Grimes Nursing Scholarship is open to students who graduated from a Harrison County high school or are residents of Harrison County.  Applicants must be preparing to enroll in the second year of the BSN program and have at least a 3.0 grade point average.  Applications are available in Student Services.  Deadline to apply is March 6, 2006.

HSC TALENT SHOW:
The 9th Annual HSC Talent Show will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18th at 7:00 pm in the HSC Main Auditorium.  The night includes an art show, silent auction, bake sale, and talent show, and should be an enjoyable time.  All proceeds from the show will benefit the WVU Children’s Hospital.  Tickets for the show are also on sale this week in the student lounge and are $5.  Tickets purchased at the door will be $6. 

SNA JACKET SALE:
Thank you to everyone who has in an interest in the jackets for Spring semester.  Things are finally starting to come together with everything, and it's time to order.  Here are the details:
Please fill out the order form attached if you would like a jacket, and return it to the appropriate place with your money.  Money must be received before your order can be placed.  Orders must be received by Wednesday, February 22.  Cost: $45.00 sizes S-XL (cost will be a few dollars more for XXL and XXXL).  The money can be left at the SNA workbench on the 6th floor, or you can mail it to Nikki Leedy, 1905 Chateau Royale Ct., Morgantown, WV 26505.  Pot State students/instructors or any other out of town students:  We are asking that you add an extra dollar onto your bill so that we can send the jackets to you.  You can mail your money and order form to Nikki Leedy at the above address.  Just put down an address where your jacket can be sent, and if any of you can have your jackets sent together that would be helpful.

NCLEX REVIEW:
A free NCLEX Workshop will be hosted by WVU Hospitals on Saturday, March 4, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.  For more information and to pre-register, contact Annette Belcher in WVUH Human Resources, at belchera@rcbhsc.wvu.edu.

NIOSH VISIT:
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness, is adjacent to the Health Sciences Center and WVUH.  It is hosting a program on Thursday, March 23, from 10 am to 1 pm to talk about the work of NIOSH.  A tour of its library will also be included.  WVU nursing students and faculty are invited to attend, along with students from the University of Pittsburgh.  If interested, contact Dr. Shelton at eshelton@hsc.wvu.edu.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
The WV Family Grief Center Dinner scheduled on the 20th of Feb is canceled due to no school in Mon. County.  Thanks to all who volunteered. 

Faculty and upperclass students are needed to help with the pharmacy physical assessment labs.  They are in the nursing lab from 9a-12n on the following dates.  Patti Hermosilla and Gail VanVoorhis teach the classes but need lots of help in the lab checking the students off on their assessment techniques.  Dates are February 27(Mon) & March 1(Wed) 

The WVU Center of Excellence in Women’s Health will be doing blood pressure screenings for the March 3 women and cardiovascular health event.  Students are needed to take blood pressures.  If interested, contact Betty Parsons, the Center manager, at Eparsons@hsc.wvu.edu.

Ridgedale Elementary School will be holding their annual science fair for 2nd & 3rd grade students on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 21st.  Nursing students are needed to do a 20 minute presentation about the circulatory system for 4 groups throughout the afternoon.  Any interested students can contact Susan Starliper at (304) 291-8074.  (Ridgedale Elementary is located on 119S, about 2-2.5 miles past the Ramada Inn.) 

The SON will be participating in two health fairs for WVU Students by screening B/Ps.  Anyone willing to coordinate one or both of these can contact Gail VanVoorhis about double hours. The first is on Monday March 6th at the WVU Rec Center from 4-7pm.  The second is on Thursday March 30th at the Towers Dining hall from 3-8p.

Leandra Gilmore is looking for help with triplets she is expecting at any time.  (She is 33 weeks as of 2/13/06).  She can be reached at (304) 288-7943.

Volunteers are needed to serve as camp counselors at a summer camp for youngsters, ages 6-21, with muscular dystrophy.  Activities include swimming, fishing, sports, arts and crafts and much more.  This year camp will take place from June 18th - June 23rd at Cedar Lakes in Ripley, WV.  Volunteers are essential to the summer camp program and are matched with one camper for the entire week.  The volunteer helps their camper participate in camp activities and with daily tasks.  However, the volunteer's most important job is to make sure the child is having as much fun as possible.  For more information, contact Alysha Nichols, Health Care Services Coordinator, Muscular Dystrophy Association, at 1-800-248-4050, or anichols@mdausa.org.

The KEEP (keep your kidneys) program was created to promote kidney disease education as well as a systematic approach to improving recognition and diagnosis of CKD (chronic kidney disease) in West Virginia.  Screenings are being conducted throughout the State by the WV Rural Nephrology Initiative of WVU's Department of Medicine, Section of Nephrology. Nursing students are needed to help with screenings for blood pressure, weight, and urinalysis. Dates and locations of the screenings are:

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Jen Sexton is looking for individuals to take over her work with at least two kids with disabilities starting around June. One young lady is fourteen with Down Syndrome and a young man is twelve with cerebral palsy.  Evening and day shifts are available, usually after school.   Pay is $6.25 and $7.25 per hour.  Very flexible hours and fun, fun work.
