UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS GRADUATING IN MAY:
The application for graduation and diploma and the alumni database form must be completed by March 1.  Come to Student Services to get your graduation packet which will include licensure and NCLEX information.  You will need to bring a check for $30 payable to WVU with “graduation fee” written in the memo section of your check.  Information about ordering the School of Nursing pin will also be in the packet.  Students in the Rural Health rotation who want to have the packet mailed to them should contact Student Services at 293-1386 as soon as possible.  August graduates are also eligible to participate in the May ceremony.  You will receive graduation and licensure information at a later time.  However, if you want to participate in the May ceremony, please stop by Student Services to complete the pin information form.

STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN MAY GRADUATION CEREMONY:

If you are planning to participate in the May graduation ceremony, you should contact the Bookstore and let them know the size you will need for your cap and gown.  This year, the gowns will be navy blue with the WVU seal rather than the traditional black gowns of the past.  Students graduating in May and August are eligible to participate in the School of Nursing graduation ceremony on May 13.

BSN FALL COURSES:
The Office of Student Services will soon begin scheduling students for Fall nursing courses.  If you have a request for a specific rotation or for particular clinical days, please notify Mrs. Shaeiwitz at tshaeiwitz@hsc.wvu.edu

ALPHA RHO BROWN BAG LUNCH:

The next Brown Bag Lunch sponsored by Alpha Rho Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau, will be February 24th, 12:00N – 1:00PM, in the Academic Affairs Conference Room (HSC South Room 6419).  Dr. Kari Sandjecklin will present, Learning together: Incorporating active/cooperative learning strategies in a large nursing class.       

BSN STUDENTS NEEDED!!!!!:
Students are needed to complete the Student Satisfaction Inventory, a questionnaire that indicates overall satisfaction with the University.  Each college and school within the University is participating, and we need to have 30 nursing students (sophomores through seniors) complete the questionnaire.   On Monday, March 5, at 12 pm (room to be announced next week) you can complete the questionnaire and get pizza and 2 community service hours for your efforts.  If you cannot come at that time, you can come to Student Services anytime between 8 am and 4:30 pm from March 1 through March 7 to complete the questionnaire and receive 2 community service hours.

ELITE TO SWEET:  A MOUNTAINEER CELEBRATION:
All Health Sciences students, faculty and staff are invited to attend this event to honor our WVU football and basketball teams, and to thank their loyal fans, on Monday, February 27, 10 am to 3 pm, in the John Jones Conference Center.  First 24 fans through the door will receive a gold WVU hat.  From Noon to 12:30, WVU football players will judge all contestants for the “best dressed Mountaineer fan”.  Prizes, including tickets to the Pitt basketball game that night, will be awarded at 12:30 to the 1st, 2nd and 3 rd place winners.  Following the contest, players will be available to sign autographs.  Interactive games, popcorn, cookies, giveaways and sign up for door prizes will be available throughout the day.

ANNUAL WVUH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL KID FAIR:
Saturday, April 1 - Morgantown Mall (Westover)  10a - 5p - Fun way to earn community service hours - The School of Nursing booth will provide blood pressure screenings for the kids as well as offer safety and nutrition tips along with a tic tac toe board game.  The kids get to see nurses in a fun setting (not just when they are ill or getting shots).  We also help staff other booths so there are lots of opportunity for community service hours.  To volunteer, please e-mail Betty Jurick, bjurick@hsc.wvu.edu.  Please plan on volunteering for at least a 3-hour shift.    You are welcome to work the entire fair is you would like.  

NCLEX REVIEW:
A free NCLEX Workshop will be hosted by WVU Hospitals on Saturday, March 4, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.  For more information and to pre-register, contact Annette Belcher in WVUH Human Resources, at belchera@rcbhsc.wvu.edu.

MSN ALUMNI LEADERSHIP AWARD:

Each year, the WVU School of Nursing Alumni Association awards an Alumni Leadership Award to a graduating MSN student who exhibits the following characteristics: 

1. Models professional advanced practice in nursing to his/her peers
2. Influences peers, colleagues, consumers and clients to value advanced practice nursing as a profession
3. Accepts responsibility and accountability as a leader and client advocate for the nursing profession
4. Demonstrates the potential and commitment to advancing nursing as a profession

One award is provided for a Morgantown based student, and one for a Charleston based student. The recipients will receive their awards at the Spring Honors and Awards ceremony on April 20, 2006 in Morgantown.

Awardees are selected through student nomination. Please consider nominating yourself or one of your peers who has exhibited these leadership competencies throughout your MSN program. Morgantown based students should nominate one of their peers in Morgantown, and Charleston based students should do likewise.  Letters of nomination will be accepted until March 10, 2006. You should address your letter to Dr. Cynthia Persily, and email it to cpersily@hsc.wvu.edu

NIOSH VISIT:
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness, is adjacent to the Health Sciences Center and WVUH.  It is hosting a program on Thursday, March 23, from 10 am to 1 pm to talk about the work of NIOSH.  A tour of its library will also be included.  WVU nursing students and faculty are invited to attend, along with students from the University of Pittsburgh.  If interested, contact Dr. Shelton at eshelton@hsc.wvu.edu.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
Kim Riley, the Community Relations Coordinator for Hospice started the Cinderella Project two years ago.  This project takes donated prom dresses and sells them to girls who cannot afford to go out and buy a $400 dress.  The dresses sell for $5 to $15.  The School of Nursing will be collecting dresses in the Main HSC auditorium lobby on March 6th-10th from 9:30am-3pm.  Community service hours will be given for a donation of a dress.  Students wanting to get extra hours by manning the collection table or to help with the Cinderella project prom fashion show on March 25 at 1:00pm at the Mountaineer Mall should Contact Erica Shaffer at eshaffe1@mix.wvu.edu.

Next WV Family Grief Center dinner will be on March 6th.  Help is needed 5pm-7pm.  Contact Gail VanVoorhis to volunteer.

Red Cross Blood drive is on March 23rd and help is needed from 12 -6pm. Contact Gail VanVoorhis to volunteer.

Volunteers are needed to serve as camp counselors at a summer camp for youngsters, ages 6-21, with muscular dystrophy.  Activities include swimming, fishing, sports, arts and crafts and much more.  This year camp will take place from June 18th - June 23rd at Cedar Lakes in Ripley, WV.  Volunteers are essential to the summer camp program and are matched with one camper for the entire week.  The volunteer helps their camper participate in camp activities and with daily tasks.  However, the volunteer's most important job is to make sure the child is having as much fun as possible.  For more information, contact Alysha Nichols, Health Care Services Coordinator, Muscular Dystrophy Association, at 1-800-248-4050, or anichols@mdausa.org.
