NURSING STUDENT RUNNING FOR BOARD OF GOVERNORS!
Junior Nursing Student Melanie Davis is currently running for Board of Governors in the Student Government Elections.  Voting is on the MIX February 20-22. 

SIGMA THETA TAU ALPHA RHO CHAPTER PRESENTS A BROWN BAG RESEARCH LUNCH
Friday, February 23 – Noon – 1p – “When an N of 1 is Enough:  Basics of Practice Evaluation Research” presented by Drs. Susan and Neil Newfield.  Room 6419 (Student Services Conference Room), 6th floor, HSC.   1.2 contact hours through WVUH.

SUMMER PAPERLESS BILLING PROCESS
Starting with the summer 2007 term, all student billing will be administered electronically through STAR. Student Accounts will no longer be mailing paper bills unless specifically requested through STAR system by the student. Students and parents will be mailed information about these changes in the coming weeks. Tutorials on how to make an electronic payment through STAR and how to request a paper bill through STAR will soon be available on Student Accounts' web site above. SNA FUNDRAISER
Elder-Beerman is having a huge 1-Day Sale March 3rd. In order to participate in the sale, shoppers must have a coupon book. Inside you will find a coupon for $10 off any purchase of $10 or more, 8 -20% off any 1 item coupons, and a couple other specials. We will be selling these coupon books for $5 each. We get to keep 100% of the profit from the coupon books. SNA current has 50 books.

ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSES OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY SCHOLARSHIP
Students enrolled in the MSN program, who are planning to graduate in two years or less, are eligible to apply for one $1000 scholarship.  The criteria are:  1. the student is enrolled at least part-time in an accredited nurse practitioner program, 2. the student plans to practice in the Ohio Valley after graduation, 3. the student is in good academic standing, and 4. the student must submit a 500 word essay on why he/she wishes to practice in the Ohio Valley.   The scholarship will be a one time award to an individual.  Application deadline:  May  1, 2007 and the award notification will be made July 1, 2007 for the 2007-2008 academic year.  Any student interested in applying for the scholarship should contact Dr. Mary Jane Smith for the application. 

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
AfterCollege, in conjunction with AACN, is offering scholarships for doctoral, master's, RN to BSN, and BS/BA to BSN students.  Information is available at http://www.aftercollege.com/groups/aacn.asp?id=27258498.  Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher.  Scholarships will be in the amount of $2500.  The deadlines for 2007 are April 30, July 31 and October 31.

SUPPORTING THE FAMILIES AND SOLDIERS HEADED TO IRAQ
The family support group from the US Army, Delta Co. 2-16 is selling t-shirts with the above logos to benefit the soldiers who are deploying to Baghdad next Tuesday.  Proceeds will be used to send care packages to the soldiers.  It is 6,869 miles from Ft. Riley, Kansas to Iraq and the families are with our soldiers every step of the way.  Both t-shirts are priced at $13 each.  "MILES OF SUPPORT" comes in a ladies’ raspberry colored v-neck short-sleeve, with the design on the front in black.  Sizes S-2XL.  The "WALK TO IRAQ" is a baseball t-shirt, white with red sleeves. The back says “Miles of Support with the # “6,869” done in baseball style. Youth sizes S-L and Adult sizes S - 3XL.  If you would like to support our troops (my son is among those who will be in Baghdad next week), please e-mail bjurick@hsc.wvu.edu for more information.  Payment is due before the orders can be placed.  Please bring checks, made payable to Betty Jurick, Health Restoration ($13 for each shirt you would like to order).  Deadline for ordering:  February 13. 

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Here are a few of the events remaining this month

  • Feb. 15 – “An Evening with Omar Tyree,” WVU’s Black Student Union hosts the novelist at 7 p.m. in the Mountainlair Rhododendron Room.
  • Feb. 21 – “Dr. Goddess.” Dr. Kimberly Ellis becomes her alter ego, “Dr. Goddess,” in her one-woman show from 7-9 p.m. at the Towers Gold Ballroom.
  • Feb. 28 – African-American Read-In, traditional read-aloud event sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honorary Society, 6-8 p.m., Laurel Room, WVU Mountainlair.

Black History Month was founded in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the black educator, activist and son of slaves who dug his way from the West Virginia coal mines to the Ivy League, where he earned a Ph.D. from Harvard.

WVSGNA (WEST VIRGINIA SOCIETY OF GASTROENTEROLOGY NURSES & ASSOCIATES)  is hosting its annual education conference, March 16-17, Lakeview Resort.  Members and non-members as well, are welcome to attend.  For more information, registration fees and agenda, please contact Patricia DeVito, 598-6226
