WELCOME BACK:
The holidays were fun but the School of Nursing isn’t its vibrant self without bunches of students milling around. You’re back and we sure are glad to see you.!
JUNIORS CAN COMPLETE THE PROGRAM EARLY:
Tertiary care/leadership (Nursing 421, 423, 425) will be offered this summer. Currently there are 16 student spaces available in these courses on a first come first served basis. You can complete this half of Senior year this summer, complete the rural community health half of Senior year Fall 2003 and graduate in December. Requests for a summer space must be in writing to Mrs. Lisa Vidovich in Student Services; e-mails to lvidovich@hsc.wvu.edu will be accepted. Requests must be made no later than Friday, January 24th.
Those students who have requested space in rural community health for summer will know by the end of the month if they have a space.
GRADUATE STUDENTS:
Students who will complete requirements for their MSN during Spring semester must complete and Application for Graduation and Diploma form and an Alumni Information Form no later than February 18. Forms are available from Student Services.
MINNIJEAN BROWN-TRICKEY, OF LITTLE ROCK NINE, SPEAKS 1/16:
To commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. a memorial program will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, 7:00 pm at Spruce Street United Methodist Church. Minnijean Brown-Trickey and eight other African-American students crossed the threshold of Little Rock Central High in Sept. 1957 in one of the defining moments of the civil rights movement.
An RHEP Fair will be held in the HSC North lobby from 2-6 pm. Site coordinators from throughout the state will be there to share information regarding rural placements in the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnerships (RHEP) program. Attend the fair and, if possible, go to the live demonstration of an interdisciplinary session at 12 noon in the HSC auditorium; box lunches will be provided.
THREE COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS FOR BLOOD 1/22:
Call 598-4095 to schedule an appointment to give blood at the John Jones Conference Wednesday, Jan. 22, 11 am to 5 pm. Your gift of blood earns you three community service hours.
NURSE UNITY DAY AT THE CAPITOL 2/13/03:
Students and faculty will have the opportunity to attend this day and speak with legislators about important health care issues. Watch for more details.
NURSING FORMAL 2/22/03:
The nursing formal will be held at Levels on Saturday, Feb. 22. Tickets are $22.00 for single person, $40.00 a couple. Each student may invite 3 non-nursing friends. Give ticket money to Junior Brandi Goss or Senior Holly Wotring from now through the first two weeks of school in Janurary.
NATIONAL STUDENT NURSES ASSOCIATION 51ST ANNUAL CONVENTION 4/23-4/27:
The 51st annual convention will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, April 23-27, 2003. Watch for more details as we get closer to the event.
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES—HOSPICE CARE:
Volunteer to be a Hospice care provider by sitting with patients in their homes, sitting with patients to allow respite for caregivers, make home visits and phone calls to patients.
Volunteer to be a “Camp Partner” with children attending Camp Knobby for a weekend in the summer. If interested in either of these opportunities, contact Gail VanVoorhis at 2293-0298 to arrange training for these activities.
Volunteer to help Hospice with fundraising activities such as monthly bingo in Preston county, golf in the spring, and other fundraising activities. Contact Carrie Brainard of Hospice at 864-0884 if you can help with fundraising.
PAYING RESEARCH STUDY OPPORTUNITY:
WVU IRB approved study is examining the effects of acute (single occasion) sleep deprivation on performance on various psychological performance measures by 18-22 year old undergraduate students. If eligible to participate you will earn $150-$190. If interested, e-mail ryanschiffbauer@earthlink.net. Put the word “participation” in the subject line of your e-mail message. In the message, tell how to contact you by phone and what time of day is best to call.
SOPHOMORES—NEED SUMMER MONEY?
If you will complete Sophomore year by Spring 2003, have minimum GPA of 3.0, are
considering graduate education, are a 1st generation, low-income, or

TALBOTS WOMEN’S SCHOLARSHIPS:
Talbots awards five $10,000 scholarships and fifty $1,000 scholarships to women seeking a degree later in life. If you earned your high school diploma or GED at least ten years ago and have at least two full-time semesters remaining to complete the program after this Spring semester you are eligible to apply. Application deadline is March 3, 2003 or until 1000 applications have been received. Applications are available in Talbots stores and at www.talbots.com/about/scholar/scholar/asp.
$1,000 WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA NAVY NURSE CORPS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP:
A scholarship to a deserving nursing student or Registered Nurse continuing study for a baccalaureate degree will be awarded for the Fall 2003 semester. To examine the eligibility criteria and application process, see Amy Martin in Student Services.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
University of Colorado Hospital, Denver, Colorado, demonstrates how they value BSN education by hiring only BSN new graduates. The hospital has “Magnet” Hospital status. Magnet Hospitals are know for having work environments that are extremely supportive of nursing. Nurse to patient ratios are one to four in medical and surgical units. A nursing student (or students to job share), is needed to baby sit nine-week baby with reflux; family lives minutes away from the Health Sciences Center. Care includes feeding, giving medicines, and age appropriate care. Four-hour shifts are desired for a total of 16-20 hours per week including some weekend time. Applicants need some experience and interest in pediatric nursing. A valid driver’s license and own transportation is required. Compensation will be based on hours available and experience. ALUMNI NEWS:
Robert Ongrady, BSN ‘97, started classes in August in the nurse anesthetist program at Norman R. Wolford school in Fort Myers, FL. He writes that his school is associated with Florida Gulf Coast University where former Associate Dean Karen Miles is director of the nursing program. Joyce Rush, BSN ’90, was married to Todd Gregg on 10/5/02 in a candlelight ceremony at First Presbyterian Church, Morgantown. Joyce is on the nursing staff of Ruby Memorial Hospital.
