GRAD AND UNDERGRAD STUDENTS--SIGMA THETA TAU INTERNATION NURSING HONOR SOCIETY INVITES APPLICATIONS:

Master’s Students:  to be considered need 3.5 GPA and completion of ¼ of the program.

Doctoral Students: to be considered need 3.75 GPA and completion of ¼ of the program.  Graduate students who do not meet these criteria may be eligible to apply as community leaders in nursing.

Junior and Senior students with GPA greater than 3.0 are eligible to submit applications to Alpha Rho Chapter.  Applications are available from faculty member Joy Maramba, room 6617 Dept. of Health Restoration.  Completed applications are due February 10.

 

GLOBAL HEALTH DAY 1/31:

All students, faculty, staff are invited to attend from noon (lunch provided) to 3:15 in John Jones Conference Center 1,2,3 a program of presentations and music to celebrate Global Health Day.  Mary Gibson, former School of Nursing faculty member, will speak from noon to 1 pm on “Midwifery Training in Afghanistan.”

 

ExSTRESS YOURSELF WITHOUT CHARGE 2/5:

In six noontime classes in John Jones Conference Room A participants will learn how to decide for themselves how much stress they choose to experience day-to-day.  These free classes from noon to 1 pm (bring your own lunch) start Feb. 5 and are offered for six consecutive Wednesdays.  Registration is optional but requested call 293-2520; for more info visit www.sbiih.org.

 

UPDATE - NURSE UNITY DAY AT THE CAPITOL 2/13:

Students need to discuss going to Unity Day with any instructor whose class they would miss; bonus points may be given in return for a report on Unity Day activities / issues.  Registration form is in the WV Nurse paper that is in each department.  Students pay $18.00 for registration which includes lunch.  Checks should be made out to WVNA and be given to faculty member Gail VanVoorhis before January 31.  Dean Martin will once again supply a bus for transport to Charleston. Faculty that will be going can also give Ms. VanVoorhis  their registration information and need to let her know if they will be taking the bus.  The bus will leave from the Pylon entrance at about 6am and return home about 8-9pm. To become familiar with issues being presented in this legislative session students and faculty can log onto the website and keep current.  www.legis.state.wv.us/  Any questions call Gail VanVoorhis at 293-0298.

 

ALL INVITED TO AORN PROGRAM 2/18:
The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses invites all students and faculty to a special program presentation by national officer Debbie Tanner:  “Professionalism and the RN=Real Nurse.”  Come Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6:30 pm in the WV Eye Institute Conference Center.  Parking is free, light refreshments will be served, CE available for RNs.  Contact Cathy Whitesides at cswrnbsn@att.net if attending.

 

FACULTY MEMBER JENNIFER STEWART-GLENN HAS TICKETS FOR NURSING FORMAL 2/22:

The nursing formal will be held at Levels on Saturday, Feb. 22.  Tickets are $22.00 for single person, $40.00 a couple.  Each student may invite 3 non-nursing friends.  Give ticket money to Junior Brandi Goss or Senior Holly Wotring or to faculty member Jennifer Stewart-Glenn room 6613 Dept. of Health Restoration.  Can buy tickets up to Feb. 17.

 

NATIONAL STUDENT NURSES ASSOCIATION 51ST ANNUAL CONVENTION 4/23-4/27:

The 51st annual convention will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, April 23-27, 2003.  Watch for more details as we get closer to the event.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS:    

BSN and MSN and DSN students who are members of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and work in critical care are eligible to apply for the AACN Educational Advancement Scholarship program.  Deadline for submission is April 1, 2003.  For application or info go to www.aacn.org, click membership, then click scholarships.

 

Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) has scholarship opportunities.  For info go to www.aorn.org/foundation/student.htm , click on Student Nursing Scholarship or other scholarship categories you may fit. 

 
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

Feb. 18 blood drive will reward donating students with three community service hours and a great sense of helping your fellow human beings.  Get ready to give.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
Juniors -Veterans Hospital, Beckley, has VALOR summer externships.  If you have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, no nursing course grade lower than a B, are a US citizen and can work 40 hours for 10 consecutive weeks this summer you are eligible to apply.  Call  Ms. Trail for application at 304-255-2121 X 4282.  Applications are due by March 30, 2003.  If you live near another VA Hospital, check with them to see if they have the VALOR program.
 

Soph., Jr., Sr., and Grad. Students:  Carrie Cobun is looking for a nursing student to help her 16 yr. old daughter who has profound Cerebral Palsy from 2:30-5:30 pm Monday through Friday and on days when public school is on break.  A car is required so you can meet the school bus and take daughter home.  Pay is about $15 an hour.  Consider a job share with another student.  Call Carrie at 293-2890 (work) or 594-0715 (home).  Or contact Gail VanVoorhis at 293-0298.

 

Seniors who completed Nursing 421 with grade of A or B:  a tutoring for money opportunity exists.  Contact Dr. Gross at sgross@wvu.edu if interested.

 

ALUMNI NEWS:

Amanda Hall, BSN 2001, was recognized by WVUH in The Center, Jan. 2003, as an outstanding employee for her personal commitment to quality patient care.  Amanda is a staff nurse on 9 East.

 

Melissa Cassiadoro, BSN 1997, earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Villanova University College of Nursing in December 2002.

 

NEWS FROM DR. MARGE BOWER:

Marge Bower writes she’s vacationing at Madeira Beach, Florida, for two months.  When home in Ohio she has done some occupational health nursing and some wellness program planning; sounds like a pretty active “retirement.”
