HAPPY 2004 TO ALL!

CONGRATULATIONS:
To all who made the "Toys for Tots" drive a wonderful success. Betty Jurick reports the barrel in Health Restoration was overflowing with great items, plus $310.00 was donated for additional needs. What a wonderful example of the spirit of the holiday.

GIFTS FROM SCHOOL 1/12/04:
Stop by the table outside Student Services on Monday, Jan. 12, to receive your Student Appreciation gift from the School of Nursing. Gifts will be available 9:00 am to 11:00 am and 12 noon to 4:00 pm.

HELP WITH BLOOD DONATION 1/21/04:
Give blood from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 21 in John Jones Conference Center. Earn 2 hours of community service for one unit of blood at this special drive. Call 598-4095 for an appointment.

RA & GA APPLICATIONS:
Housing and Residence Life is currently accepting applications for RAs and GAs to work in the residence halls. Applications are available at any of the residence halls. Applications are due January 21st and interviews will be held the weekend of February 21st.

FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP INFO:
A memo detailing the 2004 Scholarship process and an application form were mailed to your permanent address from Student Services on December 10, 2003. The deadline for returning the form to student services and for filing your FAFSA form is February 6 if you wish to be considered for a School of Nursing scholarship. Funds are limited and are awarded on the basis of combined academic achievement and financial need.

STUDY ABROAD GRANTS:
Office of International Programs has grants to support study abroad or research and training experiences abroad. Competition is open to full and part-time undergrad and grad students enrolled for Spring 2004 semester. Up to $1,000 each has been awarded in the past, most often to help students defray costs of international round trip airfare. Deadline for application is Feb. 27. Awards announced in April. Need completed GEO Grant application, course transcript, 1500 word essay or project description, personal references and a budget. Contact Patricia Patteson at 293-6955 or

STUDY ABROAD IN COPENHAGEN:
Denmark’s International Study Program is offering a program in English "Nursing in Scandinavia: Context & Clinical Practice." For more information see Dr. Gross in Student Services.

SPIRIT OF NURSING AWARD:
Undergraduate nursing students are invited to submit applications for the Spirit of Nursing Award, an award jointly sponsored by the Army Nurse Corps and the National Student Nurses Association. Our school will select the best candidate from applications submitted to Student Services. See Brandy in student services for copy of application. Deadline for submitting completed applications to Student Services is January 28, 2004.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
Faculty Gail Van Voorhis and students will be building a Gazebo from a kit for the residents of Unity Manor Apartments on January 19th, Martin Luther King Day. Start time is 8:30 am. Place is 400 North Willey Street. Boy Scouts are providing lunch so a head count of volunteers has to be given in advance. Sign up now on SNA bulletin board at Student Services or at Gail’s office. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
A family is looking for companion type care for their Mother with dementia in return for free housing in a basement apartment. ALUMNI NEWS:
Christy Lyons, BSN 1999, successfully completed her Master’s degree at Mountain State University. She is currently working as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Hedgesville Family Practice near Martinsburg, WV and reports her work is very exciting. Christy’s e-mail address is
clyons25428@peoplepc.com.   Deborah Mentus Falconi (MSN 2001) and husband Larry have announced the birth of son Kyle Landon on Dec. 3. Sister Kristen Alysse, 4 ½ years old, is a big help with 7 pound, 3 ounce Kyle!
