CONGRATULATIONS:
To Angel Smothers, MSN student in the FNP track, who has been awarded a Health Sciences Scholarship in the amount of $10,000.

To faculty member Dr. Kari Sand-Jecklin who has been awarded a $2000.00 grant from the Provost’s office to incorporate active learning strategies into the course Nursing 221.

To Dr. Mary Jane Smith, Associate Dean for Graduate Academic Affairs, on receiving the American Journal of Nursing "Book of the Year Award" in the Nursing Research category for the recently published book " Middle Range Theory for Nursing." Dr. Smith and colleague Dr. Patricia Liehr edited the book and contributed a chapter to it.

BROWN BAG RESEARCH LUNCH 1/26:
Grab your lunch and bring it to the Dean’s conference room to hear Dr. Kari Sand-Jecklin present her research from noon to 1:00 pm; title is "Knowledge and Use of Common Herbal Therapies Among a Sub-population of the American Public."

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT NEEDED:
A graduate research assistant (GRA) position is available for two years, 20 hours per week, 12 month appointment. This position pays a stipend plus tuition remission. The GRA would work with Dr. June Lunney, Associate Dean for Research in the School of Nursing, on her project "Describing Trajectories of Dying". The purpose of the project is to elucidate the nature of functional decline at the end of life. The work involves assisting with manuscripts and proposals, managing reference databases, learning spreadsheet project management and database entry and analysis. It also includes interviewing recently bereaved next-of-kin. The ideal candidate would be a highly computer-literate student with very good interpersonal skills. HELP WITH BLOOD DONATION 1/21/04:
Give blood from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 21 in John Jones Conference Center 1, 2, 3. Earn 2 hours of community service for one unit of blood at this special drive. Call 598-4095 for an appointment.

UNITY DAY IN CHARLESTON 2/5/04:
Take the bus with faculty Gail VanVoorhis and other students and travel to Charleston to learn about issues facing nursing and health care and to see the legislative process in action. EVERYONE WELCOME AT INTERNATIONAL FORUM AND POTLUCK 2/4/04:
Bring a covered dish for 4-6, Indian Dish preferred (with recipe) or you may bring fruit, fruit juice, or something else that is interesting to Food and Culture of India program Wednesday, Feb. 4 in John Jones Conference Center 1, 2, 3. Doors open 6 pm, discussion of international cultures is at 6:30 pm, potluck meal is at 6:40 pm. See notice on Student Services’ bulletin board for more information.

SIGMA THETA TAU MEETS 2/17/04:
Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honorary, will hold a business meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in John Jones Conference Center from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.

RA & GA APPLICATIONS:
Housing and Residence Life is currently accepting applications for RAs and GAs to work in the residence halls. Applications are available at any of the residence halls. Applications are due January 21st and interviews will be held the weekend of February 21st.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CRITICAL CARE NURSES:

Registered nurses completing a baccalaureate or graduate degree program in nursing and who are critical care nurses may be eligible for an educational advancement scholarship. For information see https://www.aacn.org/AACN/memship.nsf/Files/Scholarship/$file/Scholarship.pdf

FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP INFO:
A memo detailing the 2004 Scholarship process and an application form were mailed to your permanent address from Student Services on December 10, 2003. The deadline for returning the form to student services and for filing your FAFSA form is February 6 if you wish to be considered for a School of Nursing scholarship. Funds are limited and are awarded on the basis of combined academic achievement and financial need.

STUDY ABROAD GRANTS:
Office of International Programs has grants to support study abroad or research and training experiences abroad. Competition is open to full and part-time undergrad and grad students enrolled for Spring 2004 semester. Up to $1,000 each has been awarded in the past, most often to help students defray costs of international round trip airfare. Deadline for application is Feb. 27. Awards announced in April. Need completed GEO Grant application, course transcript, 1500 word essay or project description, personal references and a budget. Contact Patricia Patteson at 293-6955 or

STUDY ABROAD IN COPENHAGEN:
Denmark’s International Study Program is offering a program in English "Nursing in Scandinavia: Context & Clinical Practice." For more information see Dr. Gross in Student Services.

SPIRIT OF NURSING AWARD:
Undergraduate nursing students are invited to submit applications for the Spirit of Nursing Award, an award jointly sponsored by the Army Nurse Corps and the National Student Nurses Association. Our school will select the best candidate from applications submitted to Student Services. See Brandy in student services for copy of application. Deadline for submitting completed applications to Student Services is January 28, 2004.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
Kaleidoscope Community Learning Centers, Monongalia County Schools, has volunteer and service learning opportunities for students. Volunteer commitments can range from a couple of hours to regularly scheduled participation at Brookhaven, Mason-Dixon, Mountainview, North, or Riverside elementary schools. See bulletin board for more info.
