Nursing courses this summer. Summer courses are 12 weeks’ of course work
equivalent to a full regular semester. Even if your progression plan calls for
summer course work or you have already discussed this possibility with faculty,
you must submit a formal, written, e-mail request to be

GREETINGS FROM SWEDISH STUDENT EMMA OSTEBO:
Emma, our exchange student from Fall semester, sends greetings to all. She
writes she is back in Sweden and in her last semester. She has adjusted to being
in Sweden again but misses WVU and all the people she met here. You can send

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT NEEDED:
A graduate research assistant (GRA) position is available for two years, 20
hours per week, 12 month appointment. This position pays a stipend plus tuition
remission. The GRA would work with Dr. June Lunney, Associate Dean for Research
in the School of Nursing, on her project "Describing Trajectories of Dying". The
purpose of the project is to elucidate the nature of functional decline at the
end of life. The work involves assisting with manuscripts and proposals,
managing reference databases, learning spreadsheet project management and
database entry and analysis. It also includes interviewing recently bereaved
next-of-kin. The ideal candidate would be a highly computer-literate student
with very good interpersonal skills. For more information, please contact Dr.

UNITY DAY IN CHARLESTON 2/5/04:
Take the bus with faculty Gail VanVoorhis and other students and travel to
Charleston to learn about issues facing nursing and health care and to see the
legislative process in action. Registration and lunch costs $18.00. Info on SNA

SIGMA THETA TAU MEETS 2/17/04:
Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honorary, will hold
a business meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in John Jones Conference Center from
5:00 to 6:00 pm.
SENIORS – FREE NCLEX WORKSHOP 2/28/04:
West Virginia University Hospitals is holding a free workshop Saturday, Feb. 28,
from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm in WVU Eye Institute Auditorium (2nd floor). For more

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CRITICAL CARE NURSES:
Registered nurses completing a baccalaureate or graduate degree program in
nursing and who are critical care nurses may be eligible for an educational
advancement scholarship. For information see
STUDY ABROAD GRANTS:
Office of International Programs has grants to support study abroad or research
and training experiences abroad. Competition is open to full and part-time
undergrad and grad students enrolled for Spring 2004 semester. Up to $1,000 each
has been awarded in the past, most often to help students defray costs of
international round trip airfare. Deadline for application is Feb. 27. Awards
announced in April. Need completed GEO Grant application, course transcript,
1500 word essay or project description, personal references and a budget.

STUDY ABROAD IN COPENHAGEN:
Denmark’s International Study Program is offering a program in English "Nursing
in Scandinavia: Context & Clinical Practice." For more information see Dr. Gross
in Student Services.
SPIRIT OF NURSING AWARD:
Undergraduate nursing students are invited to submit applications for the Spirit
of Nursing Award, an award jointly sponsored by the Army Nurse Corps and the
National Student Nurses Association. Our school will select the best candidate
from applications submitted to Student Services. See Brandy in student services
for copy of application. Deadline for submitting completed applications to
Student Services is January 28, 2004.
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
United Way Volunteer Action Center has many service opportunities. See SNA

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
If you are a Junior with GPA 3.0 or better, an American citizen, and able to
work 40 hours per week for 10 weeks this summer, you can apply for the Veterans
Affairs Learning Opportunities Residency Program (VALOR) at Beckley for this

Amy Casleton Valderrama, BSN 1997, writes she is in her second year of the
nursing PhD program at Emory University and really enjoying it. Her e-mail

Scott Criser, BSN 1996, MSN 1999, has recently joined the Morad/Hughes Health Center in Ripley, WV, in the role of family nurse practitioner. Alum Karen Lee Fahey, MSN 1995, also practices at the health center as a family nurse practitioner.
