WELCOME BACK!

 

CONGRATULATIONS:

To Joanne Watson, faculty member in the Health Restoration department, on the arrival of Katherine Nicole Watson on Wednesday, Dec. 22.   Katie weighed 7lbs., 10 oz. and was 19" tall.  She was a bit reluctant to make her holiday debut, but everyone (Mom Joanne, Dad Jack, big brother Matt and big sister Alex) is doing well.

 

To Ashley Weimer, on being named as a Scholar All-American by the National Soccer Coaching Association of America.  Ashley is also a Pennsylvania state finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. 

 

SNA CAREER FAIR:

The Student Nurse Association Career Fair on will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2005, from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm in the Pylon Entrance located on the first floor of Health Sciences Center North.  Recruiters from a variety of heath care agencies will be seeking students for both summer externships and full-time employment positions.  Come and take advantage of this great opportunity.  Door prizes will be awarded. 

 

SPRING SCHEDULES:

All Students - check your schedule to verify you are registered for all your classes for Spring 2005.  If you find any discrepancy, contact Mrs. Vidovich at 293-1384 or lvidovich@hsc.wvu.edu.   

 

SUMMER NURSING COURSES FOR UNDERGRADUATES:

Plans are now being made to schedule summer nursing courses.  Undergraduate students who would like to be considered for junior or senior level nursing courses should submit a written request by email to Dr. Shelton at eshelton@hsc.wvu.edu by January 14, 2005.  Even if your progression plan calls for summer course work or you have already discussed this possibility with faculty, you must submit a written request.  The only exception to this is students in the BS/BA to BSN program, whose curriculum plan already calls for summer classes.  Decision criteria include academic achievement as evidenced by overall GPA and the space available.   

 

STUDENT APPRECIATION DAY:

Student Appreciation Day will be Monday, January 10, 2005.  All students of the School of Nursing are invited to stop by the table outside Student Services to receive a gift of appreciation.  We are glad you are here.

 

FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP INFO:

Information on the 2005-2006 scholarship process and an application form were mailed to all freshmen, sophomore, and junior nursing students’ permanent address in December.  You must submit the completed application to the Office of Student Services and file your FAFSA by February 4, 2005, to be considered for a School of Nursing scholarship for academic year 2005-2006.  Funds are limited and awarded on the basis of combined academic achievement and financial need.

 

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

The Milan Puskar Health Right Clinic is seeking volunteers.  The clinic, located on Spruce Street in Morgantown, provides medical care, medication assistance, and individual and family counseling at no cost to low-income uninsured and underinsured residents in the area. All types of healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses and counselors, are needed, as well as medical students, office workers and computer specialists.  For more information, call Mary Gutmann, volunteer coordinator, at 292-8234, Ext. 126.  Or send an e-mail to volunteer2004@hotmail.com.

 

Unite For Sight has several new volunteer opportunities during the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2005.  Volunteers prescribe eyeglasses as well as screen for eye disease and coordinate and fund diagnosis, treatment, and surgery by doctors.  The volunteers also implement Train the Trainer programs for teachers and educate children and adults about eye health and ways to prevent blindness.  All persons over the age of 18 are welcome to apply.
