CONGRATULATIONS:

To Dennelle Parker, MSN student and BSN '94 alum, on the birth of daughter Sloan Elizabeth Parker, on December 21, 2004.  Sloan entered the world by C-Section at Ruby weighing 7lbs.  3oz.

BROWN BAG LUNCH:

Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau is having a brown bag lunch on January 28, from 12 pm to 1 pm in the Academic Affairs Conference Room (HSC South Room 6419).   Dr. Janet Wang will present Female Adolescents’ Knowledge and Attitudes about HPV.  BYOL (bring your own lunch).

 

MCNAIR SCHOLARS PROGRAM OPEN HOUSE/ GRADUATE EDUCATION FORUM:

The McNair Scholars Program and the Office of Graduate Education is co-sponsoring a lunch and open house for undergraduate students interested in graduate education.  The event will take place on Friday, January 28, 2005, at the Mountainlair Hatfield’s B.  You may attend one of two sessions at 11:30-12:30 or 12:30-1:30.  Find out about graduate education at WVU, including the application process and funding.  RSVP with name, major, and rank in school by January 26 to Angela.Derk@mail.wvu.edu so that adequate lunch tickets can be provided.  Call 293-4316 for more information.

 

SUMMER COURSES FOR UNDERGRADUATE BSN STUDENTS:

There are still a few spaces left in Junior level summer rotations.  Current sophomores who would like to complete a full semester of nursing courses during the summer can apply by contacting Dr. Shelton at eshelton@hsc.wvu.edu.  The courses run over both summer sessions from May 23 to August 11, 2005.  Priority is given to students with the best academic records.  To qualify, students should have a GPA over 3.0 and should not have received less than a C in any nursing courses or science courses. 

 

GRADUATE STUDENTS PLANNING TO GRADUATE IN MAY:

Graduate students planning to graduate in May 2005 will need to submit an application for graduation no later than, Monday, February 7, 2005, to the Health Sciences Graduate Program Office.   Application for Graduation forms are available at under forms.  Please complete the entire form including diploma address.  Admissions & Records requires the address even if mailing is not requested. 

 

FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE:

Remember to submit your scholarship application to the Office of Student Services and file your FAFSA by February 4, 2005, to be considered for a School of Nursing scholarship for academic year 2005-2006.  Funds are limited and awarded on the basis of combined academic achievement and financial need.

 

FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION FOR ALL STUDENTS:

Now is the time to apply for financial aid for the 2005-2006 academic year. The HSC Financial Aid Office encourages students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1st.  The FAFSA can be completed on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Paper FAFSAs are also available in the HSC Financial Aid Office located in room G111 HSCN or by calling 304-293-3706.

 

LOAN CONSOLIDATION LUNCH AND LEARN:

The HSC Financial Aid Office is hosting a Loan Consolidation Lunch and Learn on February 8, 2005, in the HSC Main Auditorium from 12-1.  Lunch will be provided.  No registration is required.  Students could potentially save thousands of dollars by consolidating loans now instead of waiting, since interest rates are expected to increase on July 1st.

 

SNA FORMAL:

The SNA formal is February 26 from 7-11 pm in the upstairs of De Lazy Lizzard.  Faculty, staff and students alike should plan to attend. It is a blast! Dress can be formal to just dressy.  Cost is $45 a couple and $25 for singles.  Dinner will be provided, along with dancing and drink specials!  Make checks payable to SNA and put in the treasurer's mailbox in the SNA workspace on the 6th floor.  Please have money in by February 18. 

 

SPIRIT OF NURSING AWARD:

Undergraduate nursing students are invited to submit applications for the Spirit of Nursing Award, which is sponsored jointly by the Army Nurse Corps and the National Student Nurses Association.  Our school will select the best candidate from applications submitted to Student Services.  See Brandy in Student Services for a copy of the application.  Deadline for submitting completed applications to Student Services is January 28, 2005.

 

LIVE VIRUS VACCINES:

If you have received an immunization with a live virus vaccine, such as FluMist (nasal flu vaccine), MMR, or varicella, you should be aware that the virus can be passed on to contacts for up to 2 weeks following administration of the vaccine.  Please let your clinical instructor know if you receive a live virus vaccine, so that appropriate arrangements can be made to limit contact with immunosuppressed patients.

 

NCLEX REVIEW COURSE:

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is hosting three NCLEX review courses on Saturdays, Feb. 5, Feb. 12, and March 19 at various locations in the Pittsburgh area.  The review courses are free, and handouts and lunch will be provided in addition to free parking.  A flyer with more information is on the Student Services bulletin board.  For more information or reservations, call 1-800-533-UPMC.

 

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Camp Health Officer wanted for Boy Scouts of America camp in Morgantown.  Camp is held 6 days a week June 6-July 17, 2005, with possibility of 3 week extension.  Room and board provided + compensation.  Qualifications: current RN license and experience with youth.          Contact: Dr. Debra Harr at dharr@hsc.wvu.edu  304-293-1592.

 

Point O’ Pines Camp for Girls is looking for RNs for summer 2006.  Applicants must be registered nurses by June 26th.  The camp, for girls ages 6 to 15, is located in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, and runs from mid-June through mid-August.  For more information, visit the website at www.pointopines.com, or call 1-888-726-9908.
