Congratulations:
Cathy Foster Zakahi, BSN 1989, has opened her own Women's Health practice with another nurse mid-wife and an OB/GYN physician in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She reports business is GREAT and she is enjoying very much the autonomy and ability to run a patient-centered practice.

Graduation Information - Seniors:
The School of Nursing graduation convocation will be held Saturday, May 12, at the Creative Arts Center. A reception for you and your guests will start at 3:15 p.m.; this is a good time to take pictures and introduce your loved ones to the faculty. The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. Order graduation gown, hats, and apricot tassels from the Health Sciences Bookstore now. The School of Nursing will provide each of you with ten invitations; additional invitations can be ordered from the bookstore if you need more. If you purchased a School of Nursing pin, be sure to bring it to the ceremony so that Dean Martin can pin it on you.

University Graduation - Seniors:
The University graduation ceremony will be held Sunday, May 13 in the Coliseum. Plan to be there by 1:00 p.m. in your academic regalia. Come to the School of Nursing sign in the outer concourse. At the conclusion of the ceremony, we will distribute diplomas on the second floor above the blue gate.

Summer and Fall Course Registration:
You will be block registered for Nursing courses. To register for your other courses you can use the phone system or the new web site. Faculty advisors have the directions for using the web, when you see them for you PIN number discuss web registration with them.

Scholarships:
In addition to the information in the weekly message, click on the "Scholarships" button on the Student Services page. Information and applications for the "Kandzari Scholarship" can be found there.

Vance Scholarships:
If you are a part-time or full-time Sophomore or Junior student, a WVNA or WVSNA member, a native West Virginian, and willing to be employed as a nurse in West Virginia for at least one year after passing boards, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applications are available in Student Services and must be completed no later than April 1.


Hupp Loan Program:
WVNA members doing post-graduate work in nursing in financial need can apply for an interest free Hupp loan. The maximum loan is $1500 and loans must be repaid in full within a period of three years after completion of the program for which the loan was secured. Applications are available in Student Services and must be completed no later than April 1.

WVUH Scholars Program / Junior Externship Program:
Descriptions of the WVUH Junior Externship and Scholars Program and applications can now be obtained from the office of Student Services, room 6702. To be eligible to apply, Juniors must have a cum WVU gpa of 3.4 or better, a supporting reference from a School of Nursing faculty member who has supervised the applicant in the clinical practice of nursing, and be willing to make a two-year employment commitment to WVUH to begin following graduation. Selected students will have a 12 week paid externship this summer in one of their top three choices of clinical setting and receive a $9,000 scholarship for Senior year. Complete applications must be received in Student Services no later than March 14, 2001.

UPMC Scholarships:
UPMC Health System in Pittsburgh is offering a $4,000 tuition reimbursement program for seniors graduating this spring in return for a two-year employment commitment. They also have increased tuition reimbursement to $3,000 per academic year, effective immediately upon hire and this benefit can also be used for dependents and spouses for first-time baccalaureate work. UPMC Nursing Internships:
Junior students are invited to apply for a ten-week paid summer internship in one of the eight participating UPMC System hospitals. Contact Melanie Heuston, Director of Nursing Recruitment and Retention, at (412) 647-1584.

Spring Break:
March 24 to April 1 have a great break but remember to be careful out there!
