CONGRATULATIONS :

To faculty member Dr. Rose Ann DiMaria-Ghalili who has been selected as a Hartford Institute Geriatric Nursing Research Fellow for 2003 and has also been named the Hartford Institute Merck Fellow of 2003.  Dr. DiMaria’s fellowship provides a prize of $6,000 for her research.  Dr. DiMaria will participate in the Summer Geriatric Nursing Research Seminar of the John A. Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University for six weeks this summer.

 

SENIOR GLORIA OXENDALE NEEDS SUPPLIES FOR ORPHANS BY 3/13:

Gloria is going to Haiti on a humanitarian mission over spring break.  She wants to take supplies to orphans she will be visiting.  Please bring any of the following to the box in Student Services:  pens, pencils, crayons, pencil sharpener, colored pencils, blue, children’s paints, note pads, tooth brushes, tooth paste.

 

ALL NURSING STUDENTS MUST HIPAA BY 3/31:

Federal law requires all health care personnel to be educated about HIPAA; the school of nursing must keep evidence on file for seven years showing that you had this education.  The educational program is available at the SOLE web site.  Here’s what you do:

1.      Log on to SOLE – if at HSC computers it’s http://intranet.hsc.wvu.edu, if outside of HSC it’s http://sole.hsc.wvu.edu

2.      At name type first name initial with last name.

3.      If you don’t have a SOLE password click “forgot your password” and  SOLE will send you one to your e-mail address, give your MIX e-mail address, read your MIX mail for your password.

4.      Log on to SOLE, click HIPAA course.

5.      Do all the modules listed on the left hand index.

6.      Take the whole test (15 questions).

7.      If you pass the test at 80 % or better, do Student Verification Form.

8.      If you don’t pass the test at 80 % or better study it again, now or later, but must be done by 3/31.

9.      The Student Verification Form will be automatically sent to Student Services for our documentation record.

 

HELP WVU WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM FIGHT CANCER:

Women’s soccer is doing fundraising for the Claudia Mayer Breast Cancer Foundation in Maryland.  To raise as much money as possible they will participate in a soccer tournament, hold a “Women’s Soccer Player Challenge,” and hold a soccer clinic for children.  You can help by donating money or sponsoring prenursing soccer player Ashley Weimer in the soccer player challenge.  If interested email Ashley at aweimer1@mix.wvu.edu or Rokstar22@aol.com  Any donation will be greatly appreciated.

 

REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER AND FALL (THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE COURSE):

Priority for nursing is March 24.  Student Services will register all basic undergrads into Nursing courses; students are responsible for registering for non-nursing courses.  Advisors will have pin numbers by 3/6.  Make an appointment with your advisor for council and to get your pin number.  RN students and Grad students register themselves for all courses after consultation with advisor.

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES—DAFFODILS ARE COMING 3/10:

Help is needed March 10 to wrap and deliver flowers.  Wrapping will take place in Cowan Hall at Suncrest United Methodist Church on Patterson Drive.  Or you can sign up to sell daffodils in two hour shifts at the following sites:

Krogers, March 11-13, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Ruby Cafeteria, March 12-13, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

POC Lobby, March 12-13, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

Giant Eagle, March 13-15, 9:00 am - ?

Shop n Save, March 12 or 13, (date not finalized), 1:00 – 7:00 pm

 

HSC BLOOD DRIVE 3/19:

Donate at the John Jones Conference Center by appointment and get three service hours.  Call 598-4095 to schedule. 

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Thomas Memorial Hospital, Charleston, is holding a graduate nurse recruiting fair Thursday, March 13, 2:00 pm-6:00 pm in the cafeteria.  Nurse managers will be on site to interview and discuss job opportunities.  See www.thomaswv.org

ALUMNI NEWS:

Christel Painter, BSN 2002, (also known as travelingdreams@hotmail.com) is getting married April 26 to Mick Lewis of Mercersburg, PA.  Christel reports she and Mick will live blissfully in Atlanta, GA, where she will continue to work as a CCU nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
