To Senior
Ronda Webb and husband Adam who are having a baby. The due date for baby “Emma
Lee Webb” is July 30.
To Shirley Aycott, RN to MSN student based in Charleston, who was selected for the Velma M. Miller/WVAWS Women’s Studies Scholarship Award. Shirley’s outstanding work with various programs in her community such as Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, and Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening demonstrates her contribution as a community leader for women, a major criterion for selecting the recipient of this award.

A poster developed by three Junior students, Angela Schaffer, Kathy Wasco, and
Matthew Reid, to illustrate the Unity Day theme of “The 3 R’s of Nursing:
Respect-Retain-Recruit,” won second prize in the poster competition. Hurrah

SCHOOL OF NURSING HONORS EVENT 4/3:
Outstanding students, scholarship recipients, and Sigma Theta Tau inductees will be recognized April 3, 2003, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm, Health Sciences Center Auditorium. All students urged to attend. Speaker Dr. Bernadette Melnyk, a BSN alum, will present a paper titled “Blazing New Paths in Nursing Scholarship and Practice.”
IMPORTANT INFO FOR SENIORS IN CRITICAL CARE/LEADERSHIP (NSG 425) THIS SUMMER;
By finals week, group assignments and room schedules will be posted on the NSG 425 bulletin board in Dept. of Health Restoration and the course syllabus will be available to buy from HSC Copy Center.
Orientation for all students in NSG 425 is May 20, from 10:00 am – 12 noon, room 3016. NSG 423 will be adjusted to avoid a time conflict.
Students in Groups 1 and 2 dress for a clinical day on May 20 as they will tour units and make patient assignments.
All students must complete an on-line hemodynamic module available at www.pacep.org before ICU clinical begins; Lessons A, B, C, F in Level I module must be completed; a print-out of post-test results of higher than 85% will serve as verification of successful completion of these lessons.
Students must also provide verification of CPR certification, current immunizations and PPD, have functioning CHIP passwords and training, and have purchased the syllabus before May 20.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH NSG 476 THIS SUMMER:
Nursing Research is not open to undergraduate students this summer except by approval of Dr. Nancy Alfred, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs.
LAST DAY TO DROP CLASS 3/28:

Return completed order form with payment to box located at the SNA workspace. Last day to submit order is Mar. 31 by 4:00 pm.

It is in your best
interest to get in touch with Dr. Gross or Mrs. Lisa Vidovich to be sure the
University has you listed as activated; bring activation notice to Student
Services and we will fax a copy to the responsible person in Admission and
Records.
REMINDER!!! ALL NURSING STUDENTS AND FACULTY MUST HIPAA BY 3/31:
Federal law
requires all health care personnel to be educated about HIPAA; the school of
nursing must keep evidence on file for seven years showing that you had this
education. The educational program is available at the SOLE web site.
Here’s what you do:
1.
Log on to SOLE – if at
HSC computers it’s

2.
At name type first
name initial with last name.
3.
If you don’t have a
SOLE password click “forgot your password” and SOLE will send you one to your
e-mail address,give
your MIX e-mail address,
read your MIX mail for your password.
4.
Log on to SOLE, click
HIPAA course.
5.
Do all the modules
listed on the left hand index.
6.
Take the whole test
(15 questions).
7.
If you pass the test
at 80 % or better, do Student Verification Form.
8.
If you don’t pass the
test at 80 % or better study it again, now or later, but must be done by 3/31.
9.
The Student
Verification Form will be automatically sent to Student Services for our
documentation record.

REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER AND FALL (THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE COURSE):
Priority for nursing is March 24. Student Services will register all basic undergrads into Nursing courses; students are responsible for registering for non-nursing courses. Advisors will have pin numbers by 3/6. Make an appointment with your advisor for council and to get your pin number. RN students and Grad students register themselves for all courses after consultation with advisor.
COMMUNITY
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
Participate in the Memory Walk at the WVU Coliseum Saturday, May 3 to benefit
the Alzheimer’s Association. Registration and Team pictures start at 10:00 am;
the walk begins at 10:30 am. Participants ask friends, family, and co-workers
for a donation for walking the course. Collected monies are turned in at
registration on the day of the walk. For more information 599-1159 or toll-free

SCHOLARSHIPS:
The Charleston Chapter of Hadassah invites applications for a $1500
scholarship. Deadline for all application materials is April 14, 2003. A copy
of the eligibility requirements and application form can be obtained from SueAnn
is Student Services. See Dr. Gross if you have questions or need help with the
application.
If you are a resident of Bedford or Somerset County, PA, Mineral or Hampshire County, WV, or Allegany or Garrett County, MD, you may be eligible to apply for a scholarship from the LaLitta Nash McKaig Foundation. Get a copy of the application from SueAnn in Student Services. See Dr. Gross if you have questions or need help with the application.
WV League for Nursing is
awarding two $250.00 scholarships. Application materials of one letter of
recommendation and the applicant’s narrative must be returned by April 15. See
SueAnn in Student Services for a copy of the application; see Dr. Gross if you
need help with it.
