GRADUATION CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2004:

CONGRATULATIONS:

To WVU School of Nursing at Potomac State students, Sarah Bell, Amber Accamando, Javeeria Abdulghani, and Kayla Keener, who were selected as members of the Sigma Phi Omega honor society.

 

To Jennifer Douglas, junior nursing student, who is doing an internship this summer at INOVA hospital in Fairfax, VA.  Jennifer writes that the hospital is a 753 bed facility that offers many great experiences and opportunities.  There are 150 languages other than English spoken in Fairfax County.  The hospital is quite attuned to cultural diversity, and has extensive services for translation, including a website with translations of important words in various languages.  Interns come from 18 different colleges and universities. 

 

ALERT FOR CLASS OF 2007 SOPHOMORES:

A letter is being sent to your permanent address this week.  It has important information about immunization and cpr requirements, uniforms, etc.  If you have not received it by June 4, contact Student Services at 304-293-1396 or 1-866-988-6877 (toll free).  Also, orientation Friday, August 20, 9:00 am in the Alumni Center is a required attendance activity.  Continental breakfast will be served.  Parents are invited to attend.

 

SNA PICNIC

It’s not too early to start thinking about Fall!  The SNA Picnic will be held on Tuesday, August 31, from 5 pm - ??? at Krepp’s Park.  This is a great opportunity to renew old acquaintances, make new ones, and talk to faculty in a fun setting away from classroom and clinical.  Please plan to attend.

 

GRADUATION PICTURES FOR ALL GRADUATES:

The School of Nursing will give you one 5X7 of your picture taken with Dean Martin at the May 15 graduation convocation.  WVU Department of Photo Illustrations will also e-mail you following graduation with an on line address you can use to see your picture with price list and you can order more pictures if you wish.

 

WVU TESTING CENTER SUMMER HOURS

The WVU Computer Based Testing Center offers more than 1,000 tests for students and professionals, including the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  Summer testing hours are 8 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and 8 am – 4 pm Saturday.  For more information call 293-0699, or go to http://www.hsc.wvu.edu/cbtc/.

 

STUDENT REC CENTER SUMMER HOURS

Summer hours for the Student Rec Center begin May 20, and are Mondays-Fridays 6 am to 9 pm; Saturdays 8 am to 8 pm; Sundays 10 am to 6 pm.

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

Gail Van Voorhis is putting together a team for the Relay for Life, to be held June 18th at 5 pm until June 19th in the morning.  This is a great way to earn lots of hours for community service.  Help is needed with registration, walkers/runners, and the fundraiser of tye-dye tees. Walkers/runners can also collect money from sponsors.  For every $1 sponsor, you will get 2 min. of community service ($30 = 1 hour).  Food will be provided.  Registration fee is $10, and forms are available in each of the nursing departments.  There is help available for any students who want to participate but need help with the fee.  For more information contact Gail Van Voorhis at gvanvoorhis@hsc.wvu.edu, 293-0298.

 

Volunteers are needed at Camp Nokoma (diabetes camp) July 11-17th in the Charleston area.  This is a great opportunity to earn volunteer hours while gaining experience with diabetes, and having lots of fun with some cool kids.  The camp is especially interested in male students because there is a large male camper population.  For more information, contact Joanne Watson at Jewatson@hsc.wvu.edu, 293-1772.

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

A WVU student  is needed as a research assistant, distributing surveys 10 hours a week and recruiting participants at Ruby Hospital into a breastfeeding study.  Hours are flexible.  Pay is $5.50/hr.  Need someone to start right away.  Easy to learn, will train and no experience is necessary.  Contact Beth Baldwin at 292-1759 (home) or email at elbrn6e21@msn.com.

 

Central West Virginia Service/Care Inc., an agency that provides home care to the aged and/or disabled, is looking for homemakers in the Fairmont and Morgantown areas.  A homemaker must have a minimum of 32 hours training, current CPR and First Aide.  Nursing students more than qualify.  Pay is $7 per hour and $7.50 per hour on weekends.  For more information call 304-363-7375 or 1-800-436-3780.
