CONGRATULATIONS TO SANDRA (SAM) COTTONSam Cotton
Sam was inducted into the prestigious National Academy of Practice in Nursing at a ceremony in Washington DC last weekend.  Sam is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Faculty Practice.  She also has just recently returned from her second tour in Iraq as Air Force  Lt. Colonel Sandra Cotton .

The following was written in support of her nomination to the NAP:  “Sandra “Sam” L. Cotton’s distinguished career as a registered professional nurse, educator, administrator, and advanced practice clinician spans 28 years.  She is responsible for leadership of the faculty practice program, designed to support the School of Nursing’s research, teaching, and service missions.  Her nursing practice is exemplary and reflective of her commitment to vulnerable rural populations of medically underserved clients.

Through her volunteer and academic practices sites in university and community based clinics, she provides primary health care as an adult nurse practitioner and serves as a clinical preceptor for undergraduate nursing and graduate nurse practitioner students.  She has also served as a nurse consultant to numerous professional organizations and served as a tireless advocate for advanced nursing practice in West Virginia and nationally as Helene Fuld Academic Leadership and Penn Macy Academic Nursing Practice Fellows.  Sam has worked to inform health policy through local, state, and national participation in advanced nursing practice activities and provision of primary health care, as well as acute care of our soldiers during wartime operations.

She recently completed a deployment as the Element Commander with the United States Air Force 379th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron in Balad, Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.   Sam’s clear and enduring commitments to the profession of nursing and to our country are excellent indicators of her ability to contribute to the NAP.”

We are so proud of her and so blessed to have her back here at the School of Nursing.
Congratulations, Sam!

REGISTRATION IS ONGOING FOR THE NEW WVU TEXT MESSAGE EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM – “WVU ALERT”
Over 4000 faculty, staff and students have signed up for this new system implemented by President Mike Garrison and the University DPS.  This Web-based system primarily uses text messages to alert the campus community to time-sensitive information from authorized campus officials, including weather-related closings and delays, crime and emergencies.  Students, faculty and staff can sign up for the service by entering their cell phone numbers and other information online.

To sign up for WVU Alert, faculty and staff should go to http://emergency.wvu.edu/alert/; students can sign onto Mountaineer Information Xpress (MIX) and click on the emergency alert system icon. (NOTE: If off-campus, people will be asked to supply their MASTERID.)  The instructions are self-explanatory; however, users should have their mobile phones handy in order to verify the access code once confirmation comes through.

Besides the participant, the system also allows users to add one additional cell phone and e-mail address.  The system is registered with every cell phone carrier in the country and takes only seconds to minutes to activate once the registration is complete.  Accounts can also be customized so that alerts can be received via e-mail on BlackBerry devices or personal digital assistants (PDAs); Google, Yahoo or AOL home pages; or through an RSS news aggregator.  Depending on the person’s personal cell phone carrier, there may be a minimal fee from the carrier to receive text messages, but there is no charge from WVU.  In an emergency, more detailed information about the situation can also be found at http://emergency.wvu.edu/.

THE WVU-PITT PENNY WAR IS ON!
West Virginia University and the University of Pittsburgh are turning their football rivalry into friendly competition as the two schools tackle cancer, a disease that claims more than half-a-million lives every year.  Now through November 16, WVU and Pitt will engage in Penny Wars to see which school collects more loose change for its cancer center.

WVU’s collection will go to the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center Comfort Fund.  The Fund provides cancer patients with short-term financial assistance for medication, gasoline and lodging expenses.  Pitt will give its collection to the Hillman Cancer Center for lung and thoracic cancer research.

Large collection bins will be placed around WVU, including at the Mountainlair and at the Health Sciences Center cafeteria, bookstore and valet parking entrance.  Collection bins will also be set up at area businesses, including Boston Beanery restaurants, Texas Roadhouse, and the WVGameDay.com store.  Donations will be accepted at Huntington Bank’s Suncrest and High Street locations.  Huntington Bank is the event’s official sponsor. The winner of the competition will be announced at the WVU vs. Pitt football game December 1 at Mountaineer Field and will receive a traveling trophy.  On the field and off the field – we’re going to win!

ATTENTION!  SOPHOMORE & JUNIOR STUDENTS FROM KARI SAND-JECKLIN
There is a wonderful opportunity that the university offers for students, that doesn't get much publicity.  The McNair Scholar program is a program that provides mentoring for underrepresented student populations to prepare students for graduate school pursuits.  It is a formal summer program which pays a stipend to students for participating, and provides training in research (meets the nursing research requirement, so you don't have to take the course), preparation for grad school admission tests (GED, etc), opportunity to work with a faculty mentor, and grad school visitation trips--which I hear are quite enjoyable.

Eligibility criteria include being a first generation (of your family) to attend college and either having a low-income base or representing an underrepresented population (ethnic minority).  You must also have at least a 3.0 GPA.  I served as faculty mentor for a nursing student who completed the program a few years ago, and can say that she had a wonderful experience, gained a wealth of knowledge, and had a great time on the trips.  If anyone is interested in learning more about the program, please contact me (Kari Sand-Jecklin) at ksandjecklin@hsc.wvu.edu  or check out the McNair website at www.wvu.edu/~mcnair.

ARMY ROTC OPPORTUNITIES
Take Army ROTC in College, along with your nursing studies and begin your nursing career as a poised and confident Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps.  Army Nurses are valued members of a health care team that includes over 14,500 members in 37 hospitals around the world.  Army Nurses enjoy considerable respect, autonomy, and authority as they pursue various roles with the Corps.  You owe it to yourself to explore how you can be a part of this outstanding team!  Scholarships, book allowances, monthly living stipends, free stethoscopes, free PDAs for senior nursing students are just a few of the benefits of being in the Army ROTC program.  Lots of exciting advanced education specialty opportunities are available as well.

AIR FORCE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR NURSING STUDENTS
Express Scholarships available based on critical need. This program awards scholarships paying up to $15,000 per year tuition, $750 per year for books, and $250 to $400 monthly stipend, depending on enrollment year.  Two year scholarships are also available.  Click here to view the informational flyer.

HELP WITH SHOEBOX SANTA FOR NEEDY PEOPLE IN WEST VIRGINIA
LKS, a pharmacy fraternity, is taking part in Shoebox Santa which is part of Appalachian Outreach.  Appalachian Outreach helps provide food, clothes, toys, furniture, household items, and personal hygiene items to people in need in West Virginia for Christmas.  For some of these people it may be the only gift they receive for Christmas.  This is a good charity for the people of West Virginia and as their program grows they need more help.   If you would like to get involved, contact Malinda Miihlbach at mmiihlbach@sole.wvu.edu.   Currently there is a box for donations in the WVU School of Pharmacy hallway.  We are in need of soap, shampoo, shaving cream, razors, q-tips, cottonballs, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, denture cleanser, hairbrushes, shoeboxes etc.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!
