CONGRATULATIONS:
To faculty Dr. Kari Sand-Jecklin, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Laurie Badzek, Professor, on publication of their research study: “Nurses and Nutraceuticals: Knowledge and Use” in the December edition of the Journal of Holistic Nursing.

Please contact Brandy Fisher in Student Services, 293-1386, (bfisher@hsc.wvu.eduI) immediately and tell her if you are or are not attending the School of Nursing graduation convocation December 7. If attending remember you wear academic regalia and assemble in the lobby of the Pylon entrance by 9:30 am. Faculty and students will enter the HSC auditorium by procession promptly at 10 am. Luncheon will follow immediately after the convocation.

PITT PROFESSOR RECRUITING GRADUATE STUDENTS FOR EPIDEMIOLOGY:
Dr. Ronald LaPorte, Professor of Epidemiology and Director, Disease Monitoring and Telecommunications WHO Collaborating Center writes that in the next five years there will be five times more positions for epidemiologists than there are people with training. SNA CAREER FAIR 12/1/03:
This year’s Student Nurses Association Sponsored Career Fair will be held on Monday, Dec. 1 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in the John E. Jones Conference Rooms. Representatives from various healthcare facilities from West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and other states will be providing information regarding nurse externships and employment opportunities. This is a special event planned for all nursing students—don’t miss it! Any questions? Ask senior Brandi Goss or faculty member Joy Maramba.
SAY GOODBY TO ARTIFICIAL NAILS:
Ruby Hospital has notified us that artificial nails are showing up in the clinical area and this violates their standards of safe professional practice. Ditch the nails please. You will be dismissed from the clinical unit if you wear them.
GIVE BLOOD AND SAVE A LIFE 11/19/03:
A blood drive will be held Nov. 19 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the John Jones Conference Center. Call 598-4095 for an appointment. Blood donations earn community service hours.
TO REGISTER FOR PALLIATIVE CARE NURSING ELECTIVE SPRING SEMESTER:
Juniors and Seniors -- A two credit nursing elective, “Palliative Care Basics” will be taught Spring semester by faculty member Cindy Drenning on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:50 pm. The course will provide basic information and discussion surrounding end-of-life care of the patient and family in a variety of settings. Prestera Center for Mental Health Services, a non-profit community health center that serves eight counties in West Virginia, is seeking registered nurses to join their staff. They have over forty worksites within Cabell, Lincoln, Boone, Wayne, Clay, Kanawha, Putnam, and Mason counties. Services available to all ages, from children to geriatrics, include a wide range of mental health and psychological services. Summer internship program – U.S. Pharmacopeia. Nursing students in the final two years of their program can apply for one of six twelve –week internships to work in global assistance initiatives, reference standards operations, center for the advancement of patient safety, or information and standards development. Dr. Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, BSN 1979, has been awarded the Audrey Hepburn award by Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honorary Society for her significant contributions to improving health care worldwide. Dr. Melnyk is Professor of Nursing, Associate Dean for Research, and Director of the Center for Research and Evidence Based Practice at the University of Rochester. Her research, evidence-based practice, and educational projects are funded at over five million dollars. She is the founder and chair of the national mental health promotion campaign for children and teens called KySS (Keep your children/yourself Safe and Secure) . She was named a distinguished practitioner in the National Academies of Practice and she is president of the national Association of Faculties of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Melnyk’s record of scholarship includes publications in over 30 peer-reviewed nursing journals and authoring numerous book chapters.
