Message of the Week
November 01, 2006
A big hello to the students of Potomac State! We welcome you to the Message of the Week!
PAY IT FORWARD!! We can all help this happen!
Two local women were part of Oprah Winfrey’s Pay It Forward theme on her recent show. Each person in the audience was given $1,000 and one week to do something great with it and return to the show with the results. Amy Brown and Darcy Vest were lucky enough to be part of this and they want to redo the Rape and Domestic Violence Center (RDVIC). They went to see what needed done and realized this center needs serious help. We can all pitch in to complete the challenge and help those affected by rape and domestic violence and their children. Please keep in mind these clients often flee domestic situations with only the clothes they and their children are wearing and the RDVIC works to help them put their lives back together. Amy and Darcy are using their money to buy furniture and paint. They will also purchase items that don’t get donated.
The main collection site for donations is the Hotel Morgan from 9a – Noon Friday, November 3 (none later). We will also have a collection box in Health Restoration for people who can’t make it downtown. Everything has to be here by noon on Friday.
Please be as generous as you can during this enormous opportunity to make a difference in some people’s lives. The victims of domestic violence and their children need us. Here’s how we can all help Amy and Darcy complete their challenge.
- You can donate books, puzzles, games, coloring books, toys, stuffed animals (who doesn’t need a cuddly to hug during stressful times) for the children, always the innocent victims in situations like this.
- Crib sheets, blankets and bedding for twin beds – the need never ends.
- Personal care packets – soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, disposable razors, hairbrushes, lotion, q-tips, washcloths, towels. You could get together with friends and assemble some of these packs in Ziploc gallon bags. (What a great activity while you’re watching WVU beat Louisville Thursday evening!) Any questions about items? Please call Susan Eason 296-2415.

- Lots of kitchen and bathroom items are needed – silverware, pots and pans, toasters, cookbooks, dishtowels, detergent (dish and laundry), bath towel sets, shower curtains – the list just goes on. If you have questions about the kitchen/bath area, please call Heidi Wiedebusch 291-3646. Imagine having to just start over with nothing and you will know what is needed.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 3-5), this all comes together at RDVIC and will be videotaped for Amy and Darcy to take back to the show - painting, cleaning, furnishing, putting together a wonderful safe and peaceful sanctuary for the clients. Please contact Marcie Perlmutter mperlmu@aol.com or call her 292-8607 to volunteer on these days.
STUDENTS CAN HELP IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE FLU THIS YEAR!
Students are needed to assist in the preparation of the 2,500 doses of flu vaccine that will be given at the HSC Flu Clinic on November 9th and 13th. The preparation consists of drawing up individual doses of the vaccine from multi-dose vials 12-16 hours prior to the actual administration. Times for preparation will be on Wednesday November 8th in the evening and on November 12th in the evening. This is a great practice opportunity for all levels.
In addition, students who are interested in helping to administer the vaccine to patients in the clinic, will also be utlilized as long as there is a instructor present. The actual clinic hours fall within a lot of class times, but if your schedule allows and you are interested, please let us know. See clinic hours below.
Preparation:Contact Sue Turnbull sturnbull@hsc.wvu.edu or 293-6245 for details and times.
Administration : Contact Jo Watson to arrange instructor coverage jewatson@hsc.wvu.edu or 293-1772

WVU Students Turn 'rages to riches' for area charity
A box has been placed outside the HSC cafeteria for your clothing donations for this project! Let’s fill it up!
A group of West Virginia University students will raise “A-WEAR-ness” of apparel recycling and support a charitable organization at the same time. Professor Tracy Gainer Vash’s Textiles, Apparel and Merchandising 230 class will be collecting worn, usable and unusable garments, and textile products during the month of November. Goods accepted for donation include clothing, shoes, purses, belts, bed linens, towels, stuffed animals and fabric scraps. The textile material can be broken down into component parts and rewoven into new products. Apparel that is wearable will be recovered and distributed to help individuals who are homeless. Goods that are torn or too worn will be baled at the Clarksburg Mission and sent for recycling. Each truckload of recycled goods will generate cash for the mission. According to the EPA, in 2003, 10.6 million tons of textile waste was generated. This is double the amount produced in 1990. Apparel recycling will not only reduce textiles in the waste stream but will also raise funds for homeless individuals.
