HUMANS FOR SALE ART EXHIBITION
at the MAC, High Street. October 13 from 6-8pm (during Diversity Week) the SON will
be sponsoring a reception at the gallery. "Humans for Sale" explores the sad hopes,
loyalties, and betrayals that constitute human trafficking. The focus is Southeast Asia,
arguably the world's center for sex trafficking. The photographers include Southeast
Asia based photojournalists Michael Flamm, Masaru Goto, and Nicolas Lainez, and US
based photographers Neal Newfield and Wen-Fei Hsu. Writers for the exhibition include
Jim Keim, Susan Newfield, and Andrew Barnes. Students from the West Virginia University's
Vietnam Initiative Club will also exhibit photographs taken during their recent trip to
Southeast Asia.
Humans for Sale does not shy away from the beauty of Southeast Asia nor the ugliness of
trafficking, and not infrequently the images are a blend of these contrasting energies.
The viewer is hit with the visual equivalence of a sucker punch with beautiful images
that first entice and then slap common sensibilities. This exhibition has been shown
in Washington, D.C. and in the San Francisco Area. National Sponsors for the exhibition
are the Southeast Asia Children's Project, the Pacific Links Foundation& Project ADAPT,
and Green Rice Gallery. Local sponsors include: The WVU Division of Social Work, Women's
Studies, The School of Nursing, and the Office of Social Justice. There will be two
receptions. A public reception on October 3 from 7:00 to 9:00 and a special reception
on October the 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 during Diversity week at WVU, sponsored by the School
of Nursing. Please plan to attend this important exhibition.

GREAT COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES COMING UP IN OCTOBER

The annual community health fair, sponsored by WVU Health Sciences Center, WVUH, and
UHA will be held Friday, October 17, Morgantown Mall, from 8a - 8p. Students usually
work a 4-hour shift - our shifts are: 8a - Noon, Noon - 4p, 4p-8p. We are always
willing to work around your schedule. This is a wonderful opportunity for nursing
students to earn community service hours, perform vital services for the Morgantown
community, practice patient interaction skills, and get to know other nursing students.
The SON booth provides blood pressure screenings (anywhere from 600 - 800 screenings
every year). We also assist the Diabetes Education booth doing finger sticks and
will probably assist Cheat Lake Physicians again this year doing flu shots (over
1000 last year). Please mark your calendar for Friday, October 17 - this health expo
is fun, educational and important. Email
bjurick@hsc.wvu.edu
to sign up.
Saturday, October 18 is the local American Heart Association Walk and the SON is
a vital part of this activity. Last year, we had the most walkers, raised the most
money and set the bar to a standard that will be hard to beat. In fact, the SON is
probably the group who will succeed in raising that bar. This walk is fun - children
and dogs are welcome - there are a lot of activities and fun for the children, pet
stations (last year dogs got their own doggie bags of treats). Heart associated problems
are some of the leading causes of death and illness in West Virginia. Walking and raising
funds for the AHA are ways we can make a strong statement of support in fighting this deadly
disease. Contact Roger Carpenter
rcarpenter@hsc.wvu.edu
or Betty Jurick
bjurick@hsc.wvu.edu
to volunteer.
PENNY WARS!
Penny jars are located in the Dean's Suite - part of our fund raising efforts
for the American Heart Association. Have a few extra cents? Drop it into the jar
- it's faculty and staff vs. students. Last year, students won!
NURSING INDUCTION CEREMONY
Friday October 17th at 7:00 PM in the HSC Auditorium, welcoming new Sophomores and
Summer 2008 Fast-Track Students to the Nursing program.
THE 2008 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY!
WVU Basketball Coach Bob Huggins is the Campaign Chair for the 2008 WVU United Way
Campaign, which kicked off Monday and will end October 31. Did you know that all funds
raised remain in Monongalia and Preston Counties? Did you know that the United Way helped
to provide
- 130 emergency communications for military families
- 19,000 nights of shelter for those experiencing homelessness
- 6,4000 families helped with emergency financial assistance for utilities, rent and medication
- 21,400 prescriptions for uninsured individuals
- 500 adults with literacy tutoring
- 315 victims of rape and/or domestic violence with childcare for their families
- 36,150 hot meals at the Salvation Army. . . the list goes on and on - so much need - so much help is needed - we can do it again this year as we have every year.
These are people from our counties, our neighborhoods that we have helped.
Please consider making a donation to the United Way this year. . . because you can!
New this year is a huge push for student involvement in the United Way campaign.
Student government has numerous activities planned to bring attention to the needs and
raise money.

KEEP BRINGING YOUR USED PC CARTRIDGES TO HEALTH RESTORATION
We continue to raise funds for the Humane Society – The small pc cartridges we are
donating are worth around $1 and the large cartridges bring in $4 each – This continues
to be a worthwhile project, saving the animals and the landfill as well. The Humane
Society truly appreciates your efforts! This is a year round project! Unfortunately,
the need never goes away!
