CONGRATULATIONS:

To Dean E. Jane Martin, recently elected to The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Board of Commissioners.  CCNE represents 374 institutions with baccalaureate and/or master’s degree programs holding accreditation or preliminary approval by CCNE.  Dean Martin represents Deans on this board.

 

To Sophomore Honors student Ashley Weimer, named to the National Elite Feet Team of the Week for www.Soccerbuzz.com for her soccer efforts last week.  See article on “Making a Difference” bulletin board.

 

WHAT TO WEAR FOR SOPHOMORE INDUCTION 10/10/03:

All Sophomore students are required to attend this event which celebrates your entry into the profession of nursing.  Report to the Pylon lobby of Health Sciences North no later than 6:45 pm; the ceremony will start promptly at 7:00 pm.  This is a “dress up” event; women wear suits or dresses; men wear tie, suit or sport coat and dress slacks.

 

SNA CANDLE SALE DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 10/6/03:

Late orders for candles, tart burners etc. will be accepted until 3:00 pm on Monday, Oct. 6.  Give your order to Betty Jurick in Health Restoration by that date.

 

SNA NEWS:

Interested in going to mid-year conference in New Orleans Nov. 13 - 16?  Pick up an application from the SNA workspace in Health Restoration.  Applications available Oct. 3, must be returned to SNA President’s box by Oct. 10.  To be eligible for consideration must be a member of the national student nurses association; other criteria are on the application.

 

RUN FOR OFFICE IN WEST VIRGINIA STUDENT  NURSES ASSOCIATION;

If elected to an office you represent your school at the state level, propose and vote on current issues before the board, are featured in WV Nurse, West Virginia’s newspaper for nurses.  You will also be able to go to the National Student Nurse’s Association convention in Nashville, TN in April.  Campaign Rules and Regulations, position descriptions, and applications for candidates are available from Brandy in Student Services.

 

SOPHOMORE COMPOSITE PICTURE AVAILABLE:

Student Services has the Sophomore class composite picture available for purchase for $1.00.  See Brandy Fisher to obtain one. 

 

DECEMBER GRADUATES – UNDERGRAD STUDENTS:

  1. Come to Student Services now to obtain your packet of information regarding graduation and licensure application.  Be prepared to complete your application for diploma and pay the $30 graduation fee by check.
  2. If you need your packet mailed to you, call Brandy Fisher at 293-1386.  Carefully read the instructions enclosed in the packet.
  3. The deadline to order a School of Nursing pin is Sept. 26.  Order forms are available in Student Services.
  4. Graduation caps and gowns are available at the HSC bookstore for University ceremony 12/7/03.

 

DECEMBER GRADUATES – GRAD STUDENTS:

1.        Contact your advisor immediately regarding graduation application process.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

Friday, Oct. 24 from 9:00 am-4:30 pm Monongalia General Hospital will be holding a breast health information fair.  If interested in volunteering to help in breast cancer awareness, mammography and early detection efforts, call Rosemary Rattay at 598-1280 or e-mail her at honeybelle2000@hotmail.com

 

Friday, Oct. 24, 9:00 am – 9:00 pm Morgantown Mall, help with the School of Nursing booth at the Health Sciences/Ruby Health Fair.  Students work in 4 hour shifts, 9-1, 1-5, 5-9.  Wear khaki slacks if you have them (no blue jeans, no shorts) and the school will provide a t-shirt to wear and to keep.  Activities include blood pressure screenings (bring your stethoscope if you like), talking to people about stress, healthy diets, medication etc.  Students who volunteer are expected to arrive on time and to stay the entire shift.  For more information and to sign up see Betty Jurick in Health Restoration.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS:

The West Virginia Student Nurses’ Association will be awarding two scholarships at the annual convention.  You must be a member of the national student nurses association to apply.  Completed application must be received by October 25, 2003.  Applications are available from Brandy in Student Services.  For additional info, contact Matthew Reid (304) 685-1463.

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Jamie Patton, BSN 2002, and Kraig Whitehair will marry October 25 at the Covenant EMC in Morgantown.  Jamie is a registered nurse at WVU Children’s Hospital, Morgantown.
