CONGRATULATIONS:

To MSN student Angel M. Smothers who was awarded a WV search grant from September until December to complete a community project in Mercer County, WV.  The project is “Advanced Directives in the Rural Setting,”

 

To BSN Junior Lauren Brooke Smith, nominated to serve as a princess in the Mountain State Forest Festival hosted by Elkins, WV

 

WHAT TO WEAR FOR SOPHOMORE INDUCTION 10/10/03:

All Sophomore students are required to attend this event which celebrates your entry into the profession of nursing.  Report to the Pylon lobby of Health Sciences North no later than 6:45 pm; the ceremony will start promptly at 7:00 pm.  This is a “dress up” event; women wear suits or dresses; men wear tie, suit or sport  coat and dress slacks.

 

REMINDER – FREE BREAKFAST 10/11/03:

You are encouraged to come to the breakfast free for students that is sponsored by the alumni office in the HSC cafeteria, Saturday, Oct. 11 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am.  You are most welcome to attend even if your parents aren’t attending.  Respond to Gina in the Alumni office via e-mail gslaugenhoup@hsc.wvu.edu .

 

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH CONFERENCE 10/17/03:

Sigma Theta Tau Research Conference “Nursing Research: Evidence for Changing Practice in the New Millennium”, Oct. 17, 7:30 am to 4:15 pm Ramada Inn will feature sessions on Chronic Disease, Empowerment, Health Promotion, Qualitative Research, and a symposium entitled “Reaching new heights in practice: The research utilization journey.”  Student cost is $35.00.  There are scholarships for students who want to attend but need the registration fee waived.  Direct scholarship inquiries to Dr. June Larrabee at jlarrabee@hsc.wvu.edu.  For registration and further information contact Cindy Dalton at cdalton@hsc.wvu.edu .

 

BLOOD DRIVE 10/16/03:

Save a life and earn community service hours by giving blood at John Jones Conference Center Thursday, Oct. 16.  Call 598-4095 for appointment.

 

PLANS FOR FOOTBALL GAME WITH VIRGINIA TECH 10/22/03:

The HSC will be open all day on game day.  Classes are not canceled.  Instructors have responsibility for managing their individual classes especially late afternoon and evening classes.  The HSC library will be open all evening.  Dental clinics will be open the entire day; family medicine and cancer center will close midday.  Parking lots 80 and 84 will remain open for paid permit employee parking until 5:00 pm. Most of lot 81 will be available until 5:00 pm except for a portion of the lot along Van Voorhis Road

 

LAST CALL - SOPHOMORE COMPOSITE PICTURE AVAILABLE:

Student Services has the Sophomore class composite picture available for purchase for $1.00.  See Brandy Fisher to obtain one. 

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

Seniors Michelle Byerley and Jill Looney need help with Health Fair Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Terra Alta East-Preston school in Terra Alta, WV from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Provide a great community service, help your classmates, and earn community service hours.  Booths that need to be filled with two volunteers each are: childhood depression; head lice and prevention; help with the common cold; acute and chronic asthma.  Students will meet to go to Kingwood in the morning at a designated area so may all car pool and travel together.  Travel directions will be provided.  Let Michelle or Jill know you are interested immediately so free T-shirts can be ordered for you.  For more information and to volunteer contact Michelle Byerley, bbdoll117@cs.com phone 304-629-6051 or Jill Looney, Jillnicole109@aol.com phone 304-685-5443.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

The West Virginia Student Nurses’ Association will be awarding two scholarships at the annual convention.  You must be a member of the national student nurses association to apply.  Completed application must be received by October 25, 2003.  Applications are available from Brandy in Student Services.  For additional info, contact Matthew Reid (304) 685-1463.

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

ALUMNI NEWS:

Shannon Gills Shrewsbury, BSN 2001, who at graduation was one of 30 University seniors recognized by West Virginia University as a Foundation Scholar and who is currently a MSN student, will deliver the key note address at this year’s Sophomore Induction ceremony.
