 CONGRATULATIONS:
To Potomac State College nursing faculty member Assistant Professor Mary Kaye Staggers and nursing students Amber Accamando, Allison Amann, Sarah Bell, Lael Buda, Sarah Cox, Katherine Geronilla, Amber Kerns, Steven Oles, Elizabeth Smith.  They were featured in the Potomac State student newspaper, the Pasquino, on Ootober 16, 2003 in an article about nursing. 

SNA HALLOWEEN AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL 10/30:
SNA will do Halloween at Children’s Hospital from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thurs., Oct. 30.

DECEMBER GRADUATION CONVOCATION INVITATIONS:
Invitations and information about the School of Nursing and University graduation convocation ceremonies was mailed to your local address on Oct. 28.

WVUH FREE NCLEX WORKSHOP 11/8/03:

PALLIATIVE CARE NURSING ELECTIVE AVAILABLE SPRING SEMESTER:
Juniors and Seniors -- A two credit nursing elective, “Palliative Care Basics” will be taught Spring semester by faculty member Cindy Drenning on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:50 pm.  The course will provide basic information and discussion surrounding end-of-life care of the patient and family in a variety of settings.  Contact Ms. Drenning at cdrenning@hsc.wvu.edu  if want more information.

FREE NORTON ANTIVIRUS INSTALLED FOR STUDENTS:
You can have Norton Antivirus installed on your computer for free this year.  Take your machine to the Service Center in Brooke Tower or in the Mountainlaire.  Service Center hours are 8:15 am to 4:45 pm.

WV JOB FAIR HSC JOHN JONES 11/21/03:
WVU Health Sciences Placement Services has scheduled a job fair from 10 am to 3 pm on Nov. 21 in John Jones conference center.  A list of exhibitors who will attend can be found at www.hsc.wvu.edu/placement

SNA HAS DONUTS FOR YOU:
Student Nurses Association is selling delicious Krispy Kreme donuts, $6.00 per dozen.  Turn money and order into Betty Jurick in Health Restoration by Friday, Oct. 31.  Donuts will be delivered on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER LIBRARY NEW DATABASES:
Two of the Health Sciences Library’s most popular databases, CINAHL and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts are now available through a new, more efficient format from EBSCO.  Library faculty and staff are available to demonstrate use of these.  Online database guides for them can be found at http://www.hsc.wvu.edu/library/databaseguides.htm.  For additional information or help with these or other health-related databases contact Susan Arnold at susan.Arnold@mail.wvu.edu or 304-293-2105.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
You can do this service from your home – the American Cancer Society has a program called “Tell a Friend” that asks you to call friends and relatives to remind and encourage them to get a mammogram.  Each phone call is worth 15 min. volunteer time.  Instructions and forms to record the calls are available on the SNA bulletin board outside Student Services or from Gail VanVoorhis.  Forms are due in by November 10th in order to get the credit for the community service.  For more info call Ms. VanVoorhis at 293-0298.

SCHOLARSHIPS:
McNair Scholars program recruiting.  WVU is accepting applications for the McNair Scholars Program which provides hope and opportunity for promising undergraduates who seek to pursue advanced graduate degrees.  Applicants must be first-generation and low-income student or a member of an underrepresented group:  African American, Hispanic American, or Native American.  Find out more about the program and other requirements and download an application at http://www.wvu.edu/~mcnair or contact program director anita.mayer@mail.wvu.edu or call 293-4316.  Application deadline is Jan. 31, 2004.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
WVUH has nurse extern or surgical technician summer employment opportunities for BSN candidates with evidence of successful completion of Junior year.   $5000 scholarships will be awarded to 8 Externs or Surgical Technicians for a 1-year employment commitment to WVUH.  There is opportunity to continue employment through graduation (12 hours per week or a minimum of 16 hours per month.)  Forward resume, WVUH application, and two letters of recommendation by FAX: 304-598-4264 or MAIL: WVU Hospitals, Human Resources, Dept. 8121, Morgantown, WV 26506.  For info call 598—4075.  Application deadline:  Feb. 13, 2004

ALUMNI NEWS:
Lisa Perry, BSN 2002, is featured in the WVUH  publication The Center, Oct 2003 with co-workers during the WVUH employee appreciation event.

Mary Fanning, BSN 1984, MSN 1988, and Cheryl Jones, BSN 1986, MSN 1996, are shown in the same publication being “arrested” by hospital security as part of the MDA Lock-Up to raise money to support muscular dystrophy research.  Diana Topjian, MSN 1999, was also “arrested“ for the MDA Lock-Up.
