CONGRATULATIONS:

To Lori Sarver Constantine, BSN 1994, MSN 1998, on the birth of Alexandra Nicole on 9/19/2004.  Alexandra was 8 lbs. 2 oz. & 20 1/2 inches and has lots of thick black hair.

SPRING REGISTRATION:

Undergraduate students can get PIN numbers for Spring 2005 registration from your advisor.  Please schedule an appointment to prepare for Spring 2005 classes.  All sophomores, juniors, and seniors may begin registering October 18.  If you have a special need (e.g. Honors, track, band, etc.) for the Spring 2005 semester, contact Mrs. Vidovich by October 11.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS GRADUATING IN DECEMBER:

All undergraduate students anticipating December graduation should come to the Office of Student Services before October 15, 2004, to complete the Application for Graduation and Diploma and the Alumni Data Request.  Please bring a check payable to WVU for $30 for the graduation fee.  At that time you will receive information on licensure and NCLEX.  If you need the packet mailed to you, call 304-293-1386.  The Application for Graduation and Diploma MUST be returned to Lisa Vidovich by October 15, 2004.

MSN STUDENTS:

A notice has been put on all MSN course bulletin boards informing students about applying for meritorious tuition waivers.  If you have not received the information, contact Dr. Smith at mjsmith@hsc.wvu.edu.


STUDENTS IN WEBCAST COURSES:

Students in webcast courses are reminded that they should devote their full attention to the class while it is in session, just as they would in a traditional classroom setting.  If a student is permitted to attend a webcast during working hours, he or she must do so away from the clinical setting and only after being relieved of patient responsibilities.

GRADUATE STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE:

The deadline for applications for the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission scholarships for nurse practitioner students is October 15.  To be eligible, students must be in the final year of a primary care educational program for nurse practitioners.  Program participants are required to practice primary care for a minimum of two years in an underserved area of West Virginia, or teach in an approved undergraduate nursing program in the state for at least two years.  Application packets are available in the Office of Student Services.

VOTER REGISTRATION: 

Another opportunity is being made available for those of you who still need to register in order to vote in the November election.  It will be held in the Health Sciences Center South Cafeteria, across from the John E. Jones Conference Center on the following times:

Wednesday, October 6 - 12 to 1pm

Thursday, October 7 - 12 to 1pm

Friday, October 8 - 12 to 2pm

SIGMA THETA TAU FOUNDER’S DAY CELEBRATION:

Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau is sponsoring a program to celebrate Founder’s Day on October 18 in the Health Sciences Center Cafeteria.  Social hour begins at 5:30 pm, with dinner at 6 pm, followed by a program entitled Emotional Intelligence:  The Key to Leadership, presented by Dean E. Jane Martin.  Cost of the dinner is $10 for students, $13 for Alpha Rho members, and $20 for non-members.  Reservations and payment should be made by October 13 in the Dean’s Office.

SIGMA THETA TAU OPEN HOUSE:

Sigma Theta Tau Alpha Rho Chapter will host an open house for prospective student members, Monday, November 1, from 3:30 pm to 5 pm, for all undergraduate and graduate students, in the Health Sciences Center cafeteria.  There will be snacks and a presentation on Sigma Theta Tau, tips on job interviewing, and tips on professional image management.  Find out about benefits of membership in the only honor society for nurses, eligibility requirements, and the application process.  Register by October 15 by calling Cindy Dalton at 293-4831, cdalton@hsc.wvu.edu

SPECIAL BLESSING FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS:

The weekend of October 17 and 18, at each of the regular services held at St. John's University Parish on the Main Campus, there will be a "White Mass".  The service is intended as a special recognition of health professionals.  There will be a special blessing for them at the end of the service.  All are welcome to attend, and the event is interdenominational. 

ALPHA PHI OMEGA DINNER TO BENEFIT AUTISM SOCIETY:

Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, is raising money for Autism Societies of Pittsburgh and Northern WVA through a project called Run to PITT (http://www.aporun.org/).  Alpha Phi Omega will host an elimination dinner at the Hotel Morgan on October 15.  Tickets are $40 cash or check.  There will be a $500-$1000 cash prize that will be awarded by the end of the dinner.  Proceeds from the dinner go to the Autism Society.  For information or to purchase a ticket, contact Kevin Murphy, (304) 685-6873, nivek_murphy@hotmail.com.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

On Monday October 18, November 15, and December 20, volunteers are needed to help at the Mon County Grief Center dinner.  Meet at the Church on Burroughs St. at 4:30 pm.  Dinner goes until 7pm or whenever clean up is completed.  Eat dinner too!  This will be an ongoing service project every third Monday of the month.  For more information, contact Gail VanVoorhis at 293-0298, gvanvoorhis@hsc.wvu.edu.

 

Blood drive, Thursday, October 21, and Wednesday, November17 in the John Jones conference center.  Help all or any part of the time 12 noon to 6 pm.  There is a brief training that needs to be arranged by calling Carolyn Zinn at 598-9500, Ext. 114.  All training is counted in your service hours.  Blood drives are ongoing, on a once a month basis.

 

American Cancer Society Pink Ribbon Challenge and Health Expo is on Saturday, October 23.  Registration starts at 12 noon and event will close at 3 pm.  Volunteers are needed for registration, Health Expo, and Tell-A-Friend booth.  Contact Laura to sign up at 296-8155 Ext . 16.  Join the American Cancer Society for a non-competitive walk designed to raise awareness, foster camaraderie and raise funds for breast cancer research, patient services, education, and advocacy.  Questions, call Gail VanVoorhis at 293-0298.

 

On Wednesday, November 3, from 1 pm to 3 pm, help do the blood pressures for the second NSG 110 physical screening.  Takes place in the skills lab.  Work all or part of the time.  Contact Gail VanVoorhis at 293-0298.

 

School nurse at Morgantown High is seeking junior or senior level nursing students to assist with blood pressure screening for 9th grade students on November 1 and 3, 8 am – 2:30 pm.  Can arrange to work the entire time, or morning or afternoon.  For information, contact Pam Berryman, RN at Morgantown High, 291-9260 or 282-3204 (cell), or by email at pberryma@access.k12.wv.us.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Assistance is needed for a 92 year old man who resides at Heritage Point and has Parkinson’s disease, but has good mental capacity, is lovable, friendly, easy to get along with and a joy to be around.  Duties include running errands, taking him to the store, lunch, doctor appointments, etc., and some light housekeeping.  Pay is $8/hour for 2-3 hours per week, preferably Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.  Contact Sandy George at 293-3212 (work) or 329-1784 (home).
