FLU SHOTS FOR STUDENTS:

Flu shots will be given on Wednesday, October 27th at the University Health Service in the afternoon and at the Rec Center from 2-8 pm. They are restricted to those students with chronic diseases that affect the immune system (asthma, hepatitis, etc.) and those who will be working with patients in the intensive care units.

NEW ELECTIVE COURSE:

NSG 493L, Spirituality and Health, will be offered as a 3 credit elective in the Spring 2005 semester.  The course will be taught online by Sister Barbara Kupchak.  For more information, contact bkupchak@hsc.wvu.edu.

HSC WIRELESS NETWORK ACCESS:

Online registration forms for students to request access to the HSC wireless network are now available through the SOLE portal.  The HSC wireless network supports laptops and PDA devices with 802.11b compliant network adapters.   Students wishing to gain access to the wireless network will need to complete the online form located at http://sole.hsc.wvu.edu, click "Useful Links", then click "Wireless Device Registration".   The completed form will route to the School of Nursing for approval.  Once approval is granted, the device will be registered and the student will be notified.  For a list of wireless service areas in the Health Sciences Center go to http://iso.hsc.wvu.edu/notebook/class.html .  All users of the HSC network must be aware and adhere to the WVU Computing Policies and Procedures, including state and federal laws that govern network usage.  The WVU Policies and Procedures are available for review at http://oit.wvu.edu/oit/policy/p&plist.htm.

FREE NCLEX WORKSHOP:

Senior nursing students are invited to attend one of two free NCLEX Workshops hosted by West Virginia University Hospitals.  The first will be held Saturday, November 6, 2004, at the Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa from 8:30 am to 3 pm.  The second will be on Saturday, February 26, 2005, from 8:30 am to 3 pm at Ruby Memorial Hospital.  For more information and to pre-register, contact the WVU Hospitals Human Resources Department at (304) 598-4075 or 1-800-453-5708, or email wvuhjobs@rcbhsc.wvu.edu.

HSC JOB FAIR:

GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

The Institute for Credential Innovation (formerly IREC) of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) announces the Margretta Madden Styles Credentialing Scholars Grant that provides up to $5,000 to a doctoral student conducting dissertation research or an evidenced-based project that focuses on credentialing for nurses.  The application is available at http://www.nursingworld.org/ancc/education/grants.html.  Press release is at http://www.nursingworld.org/pressrel/2004/pr1007.htm

 

Nurses Education Funds, Inc. has scholarships available for students enrolled in masters degree and doctoral programs in nursing.  The number of awards and amount of each depend upon available funds.  Application deadline is March 1, 2005.  For more information, including application materials, visit the website at http://www.n-e-f.org/.

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

Applications are being accepted for the Foundation of the National Student Nurses’ Association (FNSNA) 2005-2006 scholarships.  Scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500, and may be applied towards tuition, books, and academic fees.  Selection is based on academic achievement, financial need, and involvement in student nursing organizations and community health activities.  The deadline for the FNSNA to receive a completed application is January 20, 2005.  The application is available for download on the NSNA website at www.nsna.org, click on Foundation.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

The next WV Family Grief center dinner is Nov. 15th at 4:30 at the Suncrest Methodist Church/Trinity Campus.   We are also looking for volunteers for the 20th of December.  Since this is a holiday for students we are offering double community service hours.  Faculty are welcome to help.  Contact Gail VanVoorhis at gvanvoorhis@hsc.wvu.edu.

If you want to dress up and create smiles, the SNA is visiting Children's Hospital on Sunday, October 31st at 3:30pm.  We will be meeting in the conference room to gather the goods and then visit each room.  Costumes are required!  No really scary ones though.  For more information, contact Gail VanVoorhis at gvanvoorhis@hsc.wvu.edu.

Work with local at risk youths doing anger management and violence prevention using sport as the mechanism of instruction.  NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!  Available times: 3:30-4:45 Tues and /or Thurs.  No ongoing commitment required, but available if desired.  Contact: Jack Watson at 293-3295 (ext 5273) jack.watson@mail.wvu.edu.
