CONGRATULATIONS:

To West Virginia University Hospital on achieving Magnet Hospital status through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. WVUH is the first hospital in West Virginia to receive this designation, which recognizes nursing excellence.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS GRADUATING IN DECEMBER:

All undergraduate students anticipating December graduation should come to the Office of Student Services before October 14, 2005, to complete the Application for Graduation and Diploma and the Alumni Data Request. Please bring a check payable to WVU for $30 for the graduation fee. After you turn in your application and payment for graduation, you will receive information on licensure and NCLEX. If you need the application mailed to you, call (304) 293-1386. The Application for Graduation and Diploma MUST be returned to the Office of Student Services by Octobe4 14.

 ALPHA RHO RESEARCH CONFERENCE:

Alpha Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International will host the 3rd Biennial Nursing Research Conference, Nursing Research: Making a Difference in Quality Health Care, on October 14th at the Morgantown Ramada Inn. Details and the registration form are on the School of Nursing website at www.hsc.wvu.edu/son. Registration deadline is October 7.

PREMATURE BIRTH SEMINAR:

WV Chapter March of Dimes, WV Chapter AWHONN, and WVU Children’s Hospital present Premature Birth: Understanding the Causes; Coping with the Consequences, on Friday, October 21, 8:30 am – 3:15 pm, at the Evansdale Campus, NRCCE Auditorium. See flyer outside Student Services for more details.

THIRD ANNUAL WV JOB FAIR:

The WVU Health Sciences Center’s 3 rd Annual WV Job Fair for residents, fellows and health professions students will be held on Friday, November 4, 2005 from 10 AM – 3 PM in the John E. Jones Conference Rooms in the Health Science Center, WVU Morgantown. Over 40 exhibitors from across the state will be here to meet with students and residents.  MSN STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS:

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has announced the availability of $10,000 scholarships for student in the final year of a nurse practitioner program or an MSN program leading to a career in nursing education. Program participants are required to practice in primary care for a minimum of 2 years in an underserved area of West Virginia, or to teach for at least 2 years in an approved undergraduate nursing program in West Virginia. Application packets are available from Brandy Toothman in the Office of Student Services. The deadline for return of completed applications is October 15, 2005.

 BLOOD DRIVE :

There will be a blood drive on Thursday, October 20 from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the John Jones Conference Center. To make an appointment log on to www.redcross.org or call 598-0732. Students receive community service hours for donating. Thank you for giving the gift of life.

 COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

M.O.P.S. (Mothers of Preschoolers) is looking for childcare for our bimonthly meetings at Chestnut Ridge Church. We meet the first and third Thursdays of the month from 9 am to 11:30 am. (NO meetings in January or summer). This is a club that allows Moms to meet and do activities, education, and crafts together. Child care is provided in one of three age-specific classrooms. While the Moms meet, the children play together and also do activities and crafts. If you are interested in payment instead of community service hours, the hourly rate is $6.00.  SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, invites students to apply for their Summer Student Professional Nurse Program (SPN). SPN’s are paid $12.00 per hour and work full-time during the 12 week program. Furnished housing is also provided. The Methodist Hospital is located in the Texas Medical Center and has 1200 beds. It has received Magnet recognition for nursing excellence and superior patient outcomes. The deadline for applications for the Summer SPN Program is January 31, 2006.  EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

WVUH has six casual (working less than 20 hours a week) Anesthesia Extern positions available. Work requires some knowledge of anesthesia practices, as well as knowledge of aseptic technique practices. Includes the daily cleaning, stocking and organization of equipment and supplies; set-up, cleaning, dismantling items and environments used in patient care. This would be a great experience for those students who want experience in the OR. Students that are interested can go to www.wvuh.com to apply for these positions.

Help needed to care for elderly gentleman in is home. Wife is also present in the home. Both husband and wife are in their 90’s and are fairly active. Pay is $10/hour. Home is in Greystone at Cheat Lake. For information, contact Kim Kelley at 594-0464.

Two positions for graduate students are available involving work with HRSA funded training grants for up to 10 hours per week. The overall goal of these grants is to increase awareness of and sensitivity to literacy and cultural issues in the health care provider/patient interaction. The grants will involve incorporation of communication/cultural and literacy issues into the existing curricula and the evaluation of same.
